Cat food recommendations

Looking to wean my crew off Purina One Kitten (even though i have two 3 yr old girls and 9 yr old boy, they love this food). I also feed a Royal Canin urinary formula that they seem to like that okay as well.

Looking for recommendations on a new kibble that is dry, easy enough to obtain (preferably Chewy), isn’t crazy expensive, and palatable- as older male is picky. Doesn’t have to be grain free.

Any ideas?

We are using “GO” urinary stuff. I have one male cat that has had expensive urinary issues a few years ago, and I started buying urinary food from the vet (expensive). Then the vet let me down on supply, and that’s when I moved to “GO”. I have another OLD male cat, who has had no urinary issues, but he’s a candidate. And we also have one picky female cat with no issues, semi elderly. All in the same house, so separate feeding isn’t really a possibility. Everyone really likes the GO food. The first cat mentioned here is now FAT… really too fat (we keep telling him), and I’m trying to limit the amount of food as much as I can (but it’s difficult to do this). If you can find “GO” food, I can attest that they do like it, and will eat it.

My choice is Iams.
I started buying the Urinary because I had an FIC cat.
I tried the Purina version, FIC cat was fine, but it made my other guy puke.
Since I lost FIC cat, so that isn’t a threat any longer, I tried other Iams: Senior & Healthy Indoor & they are tolerated.
Chewy carries Iams.
Not the cheapest, but less than any of the RX kibbles.

Where do you buy it from?

I buy Taste of the Wild at Tractor Supply and all my cats like it. I’d call it moderately pricey at $40 for an 18# (I think) bag.

It comes in several varieties and all seem to feature novel proteins.

My cats go nuts for Costcos brand of dry cat food.

They love Purina one and Tikkis for dry options as well.

They primarily eat wet but like to nibble of kibble when they get up from naps.

My kitties have all loved Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry food. I just feed the regular adult version. It is grain free. Easy to get at PetSmart, Amazon, or Chewy. I don’t price compare because I like this food so not sure on the value.

My male cat likes to eat the dog’s food (and the dog lets him) so I may not be of much help.

My just eat Purina Cat Chow I buy at Walmart. It’s nothing special. They get to share one can of a Purina Fancy Feast in the morning (I have 3 cats) during the winter.

Mine are mostly outdoor cats (although they do get to come in the garage) and I don’t feed them the wet can food in the spring, summer, fall because they are off catching mice and gophers and usually are just not hungry enough.

If your crew does well on the Purina One they’re on now, why are you looking to change? What do you want in a new food that you’re not getting with your current stuff?

Without knowing what your goals are with the switch, it’s really just a shot in the dark recommending something different!

Any pet store has it, around here anyway. It’s NOT from a vet. It has an exclamation mark! after the Go. So it’s “GO!”. I forgot the ! in the earlier post LOL.

Because they’re 3 and 9 and they eat purina one kitten. I’d like to switch over to an all adult diet. They also appear petered out on it.

I may start with one of these suggestions and then work my way through if needed. I’ve tried a few other purina one products that didn’t go over as well as the kitten, but as I said, it really is time for them to move on from kitten kibble.

A kitten diet isn’t a bad thing for adult cats.

Pepcid is useful for any inappetance. Playing food roulette is often pretty frustrating since it doesn’t address the root cause of refusal.

All of my cats have liked the Taste of the Wild dry food. I had to stop feeding this because my oldest cat developed CKD and Taste of the Wild is too high in phosphorous. Now they’re all eating Hill’s Urinary Hairball Control dry food, and they all like it. In fact, one cat likes it a bit too much and has become a genuine porker.

Pet stores sometimes have sample packets of food that you can try to see what your cats will eat.

Sample packs are awesome. Nothing worse than buying a huge bag and then they snub their noses at it :woman_facepalming:

I feed the Purina One Indoor Advantage. They don’t get much, mainly just for entertainment and to hold them over between meals. But they eat it readily. They were on the Purina One Kitten for the same reason until they were about 1yo and the transition went smoothly.

I feed this. It was actually recommended on a FB page for my Hedgehog as part of his food mix so I ended up switching my cats over to it as well.

I use Hill’s Science Diet Urinary formula for my 5 of different ages. The Urinary formula is good for males and doesn’t hurt the females. I also give them all Friskies canned food for breakfast. My vet just recently complimented them on their beautiful healthy coats :joy: It’s my understanding the kitten food may be too high calorie for adults unless they need the extra.

I agree and my older male is a bit…plump :joy:

This picture makes him look huge. He’s probably around 15 lbs though.

I feed the Hills Science Diet urinary/hairball formula and it comes from Chewy (no prescription).

My friend who is also a veterinarian would advise Purina One, Royal Canin, or Science Diet. She would specifically recommend against Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild.

My cats were on Taste of the Wild previously and they seem happier and healthier since I switched them to the Science Diet. In particular, the cat that had a heart issue stopped having one after the switch, without any other treatment.
