Cat Fur "changing of the guard"-- shedding summer coat/growing winter one?

  1. Why have there been no good Cat Threads lately?

  2. I know I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but my best effort at a Weekend Cat Topic is:

What up with cats having summer and winter coats? Do you think they do that, as horses do? Do you notice a big difference? Do you think the whole shedding/replacement period is shorter for them?

The siamese mafia shed all year. I see no difference in seasonal coats, but recently starting Furminating those I can get to hold still. Some will offer all sides for a good hide scrubbing…some threaten me with death for just looking at them with it in hand.
I can make another cat with the hair they leave on the rug…

My older barn cat sheds out like crazy in the spring, but she’s always been a mostly outdoor cat. Last year she was an in at night cat and shed much less this spring.

Very confusing— the pro-scrub cats and the antis.

Also, with all the sides, it sounds like your cats are rectangular. Did they cost more than regular cats like mine who become weird mobius strips when I try to groom them?

A mobius strip!! Ya…that describes a couple of them. Miss Waiamai looovvves the Furminator and its a good thing cause she has the heaviest…thickest…densest coat of all the mafia. Catch her in the right mood… And she will lay flat on the rug. Only the rug…not the hardwood floor. Do one side, chin to butt, when she figures that one is done she rolllsss to the other. Then the belly…GOT to do the belly. And she sticks her thighs out to be done…she wears thick woolies…finishing up with a total back scrub right to. The. End. Of. Her. Tail. Ya kind of a square…and I could make another entire cat from her unwanted undercoat.

then when she is thoroughly done she goes and Rolls!!! In the pile of her own hair. Gets up and trails it everywhere:cool:
For some reason that hair pile gets a lot of attention from the rest of them. Its not like its a Strange Smell…its just out of context for them. And spooky.

Her daddy enjoys a good petting but one-just one- look at that evil torture device will send him into hiding. :o

That’s a cat who knows how to help you help her.

I think she’s lying on the rug for Full Body Traction. Like claws, but with your fur sticking you to the rug, thus using less metabolic energy to get it done. Without that, she’d be dragged along a smooth wood floor with each stroke. No good.

O. m. g. That link needs to go to my mom…. so that she can justify throwing out her vacuum rather than just not vacuuming.

Oh yes indeed, they do have a summer and winter coat. My long/medium haired girl has a very thick winter coat with a huge mane like a lion then she blows it out and has a much shorter summer coat.

I try to find some pictures, but she feels like pictures steal her soul so isn’t a fan.

Winter:

Summer:

Not the best examples but the ones I found the fastest. She started putting her winter coat back on just recently.

One of my cats grows a thicker coat in the winter, sheds it out in the summer. Unlike my former horse, her coat does not change color with the seasons.

My other cat keeps the same coat (and color) year round and sheds a lot less. They are two totally different breeds, one being a DSH, the other a FMH (Foreign Medium Hair, according to her first vet in the US).
