Cat litter box odor control

I’ve recently moved and as a result my litter boxes are now in a smaller location, closer to the main part of the house. I have three cats and three boxes. Everyone is healthy and they all get along. No one is going outside of the boxes.

However, there’s a smell.

I clean the boxes 1-3 times per day, use the add in deodorizer and have air freshener. About once a week or two I will hose them out and spray with Clorox.

There’s still a smell.

I’m using Arm and Hammer clump and seal litter.

Does anyone have tips on how I can make the area smell better?

The only litter that I have found that controls odor and doesn’t add an odd perfume smell to the smell of the box is Fresh Step Unscented. I have three cats too but one gigantic box think small childs swimming pool sized. The litter prevents all smell that they create. I am so anal about the smell and cleanliness of my house and people who come over have no idea I have cats. I house/animal sit and there are houses I walk into that I can barely stand to be in.

I recently added an air purifier with a UV sanitizer to my house because my allergies are particularly bad this summer and the office that my litter box is in actually smells clean. It never had an odor before but its incredible the difference I’ve noticed.

I’m not sure if you rent or own… I own my house, and I have the litter boxes (3 boxes for 2 cats) in my basement storage area. I cut a hole in the basement door and added a cat door, so the cats can come/go from there as they please, but it makes a HUGE difference with the smell factor in the rest of the house. (Unfortunately I have one cat who is inconsistent with covering his turds, and when he takes a crap, OMFG. But thankfully, I only notice it when I happen to go into the basement.)

My cats’ food and water is down there as well, and a bonus is that it gives the kitties a refuge away from my dogs, as well as preventing the dogs from having access to the food and litter boxes.

I have 2 cats in 3 boxes. I use Swheat Scoop litter and an enzyme additive (unhelpfully called Natural Cat Formula Kitty Litter Treatment, but I get it on Amazon) and there is no smell unless I’ve been lazy about keeping the boxes clean.

I am completely paranoid about my house smelling like cat pee, and I have no complaints with the litter top dress.

I use World’s Best Cat Litter. My litter box is in my living room. Most people don’t even know I have a litter box in the house, let alone in the living room. I have friends that are very sensitive to odors, and whenever they are around, I ask them if they smell anything. They never can!

I have four cats, and four boxes. I use Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light Unscented. I clean the boxes faithfully twice a day and am anal about getting every last little kerschnibblin of dirty litter out of the box. I make sure that the litter is deep enough in the box so that they don’t dig all the way to the bottom and pee on the box itself. I don’t use any special deodorants and, I, too, always check with my friends to make sure that they can’t smell anything (they never can).

I wonder if it could be your food? I’ve noticed that the better the quality of food that I use, the less the poop smells. Do they have free access to water, placed away from their food, so that they are drinking well and diluting the pee? If you feed wet food, do you add water to that food?

I use the Blue Buffalo walnut litter or World’s Best. My very large litter box (2 cats) is in a spare bedroom in a closet. The only time mine smells is when my male cat whizzes on the sides (I use a large tote for a litter box). Then there is some smell until I can clean it with a bleach wipe. At least he always gets IN the box, he just doesn’t always squat.

I clean it twice a day.

My question, with all the cleaning you are doing…it is something in the ROOM with the litter boxes and not the litter boxes? Check the furnace vents and such.

Good luck.

Susan

what are you feeding?

i have moved house 3 times with the same cat and at houses 1 and 3 he was raw fed with the litter tray actually in the kitchen-barely noticed it.

house 2 he had more tinned food and dry(due to sharing with 3 other cats not mine who wouldnt eat raw and couldnt be fed separately etc) and OMG did it stink!!!

back on raw now and he can literally crap, walk away, and you cant smell it unless you put your head in the litter box. Plus he lost weight and looks overall better.

I used Arm & Hammer litter because I couldn’t find my usual brand at the store I was at and decided to try it. It was horrible. My whole basement smelled despite the litterbox being clean. Will never use that stuff anymore.

My usually brand is Fresh Step, which works really well.

I also use World’s Best litter, and it’s not bad at all unless one of the cats fails to cover their mess. I have an open floor plan and very small bath and laundry rooms, so it’s hard to really hide the box out of common traffic areas.

My guys have very good bathroom etiquette, so it’s not a big issue. And since they PREFER to go outside, and walk with me and the dogs, and will go potty as we are out, just like the dogs.

I hide my litter box behind a little privacy screen I got from IKEA. It sits in the corner, then I have a screen, and then a chair in front of the screen. It works out well…I actually hid a broken vacuum behind it until I can take it to a place that recycles appliances.
