Cat peed on roommate's bed, clothes, comforter... eeek

He’s going to the vet ASAP tomorrow; usually when he does this (and it’s been 1+ year since he did it last) it’s something physical, like a UTI or one vet mentioned a chronic urinary syndrome as a possibility.

Either way, it happened yesterday I think as we were both out. Part of me wonders if he was scared due a HUGE thunderstorm/downpour in the Charleston peninsula.

I told roommate to give me the dry-cleaning bill for her comforter, and that I would buy her a new air mattress. She said no to the air mattress, so I cleaned her current one best I could with the special enzyme cleaner. I also told her that for any clothes that still smelled or showed a stain, I’d reimburse her for that as well. She was a little surly (we are having issues with the house we rent overall and it’s driving us both nuts), so I asked her if there was anything else she wanted me to do; she said no, she didn’t really want to talk about it.

Ugh. He’s on the special SD urine dry food (one small scoop every day), and then the majority of his food his canned wet food. Previous visits to the vet over the years have shown UTIs and crystals in his urine. I have noticed his urine seeming to look ‘slushy’ when I pick his litter box, but I attributed it to the high-as-balls humidity here in Charleston.

Just a vent, but I love/hate this little furball.

The last oder removal product I’ve tried is called
“Dumb Cat” and it has been by far the very best. Give it a try. I purchased mine at Petco or online.

Wash her clothes with a cup of vinegar, it will take the smell right out.

Spray some on the air mattress too, and leave it in the sun. (Which will also help with odor. Can leave it inside, too, but it will smell vinegary longer.)

Oh, that’s too bad. My best friend cat - really like this smart, smart cat who claims me as his own - wants to urinate on my clothes or whatever is mine. He was neutered young. I have to keep it up and he’s not allowed in my bedroom which is a shame. I try to keep my stuff up so this doesn’t happen. I tell him he the best cat in the world and the worst.
I hope if your kitty has a uti, it clears up well, and that your roommate is OK. When it’s “safe” :), play her the Freddie Mercury (Queen) song he wrote to his cat. The cat and the song were named “Delila”. It’s cute and is about his cat (he was a cat person) urinating on his bed.
Accidents do happen with animals of any kind.

Don’t mess with anything except this. None of the rest work a billionth as good as this. You can put it in the washing machine and carpet cleaner too. http://www.amazon.com/Thornell-CO-OC-THORNELL-Cat-Odor-Off-Concentrate/dp/B0002XJ11E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407691783&sr=8-1&keywords=cat+odor+off

The last time I tried to dry clean something with cat pee on it, it came back smelling WORSE (and still like cat pee :() I don’t know if things have changed–this was probably 10+ years ago–but I would advise caution with sending the comforter out. I’d put it in the washing machine on delicate and air dry instead.

Daily cosequin might also head off future pee issues, and is cheap.

Can you not keep cat out of her room?

As a good roommate you might contain kitty to your room when you’re out - I’d definitely do this for at least the next few weeks.

Laurierace is dead on about using the “right” cat-pee formula, don’t wash anything warm/hot, instead soak/rinse cold/cool with the enzyme product … only apply heat once you’re certain that the urine residue is completely gone.

GoForAGallop vinegar may take the smell out for you - anything acidic will cut the odour, sprays with oil of spearmint/peppermint also help, especially as the residual mint tends to be rather unattractive to cats - but there will still be loads of “marking” residue for cats.

The vinegar doesn’t even work for me, I still smell that cat urine “residue” after 3-4 washes.

Ugh, what a bummer. I am a big cat lover but that pee is awful.

I hope you can get all your roommate’s stuff cleaned or replaced (and I would totally replace everything … even if she told you you didn’t have to.) Peace among roommates is worth a lot, after all. And I echo alto’s suggestion of keeping your cat contained in your room when you are not around…

Good luck with the remediation

Cats cuss with their piss (and poop). You know it (though you might not have put it in these terms), but more to the point, they know it. Cats are intentional about where they eliminate.

Chances are that your cat was afraid, alone (so no reassurance, but also no authority figures around to keep kitteh in line), and perhaps not too fond of your roommate. If it used to be you and kitteh alone, plus you added a new person to the mix (and worse, to a house that belonged to the cat and you), then your roommate bore the brunt of your cat’s self-pity.

I’d guess that all of those factors built up to the stressful point that the cat decided to throw caution to the wind and let a whole bunch of f-bombs (read: cat piss) fly.

Do run this idea by your vet because it’s a pretty aggressive hypothesis. You have to be careful attributing intentional malice to a cat, even though they are capable of it. You really don’t want to punish a cat if you guessed wrong.

A safer course of action is to keep kitteh out of housemate’s room, and her pee-absorbing possessions out of harm’s (cat’s) way.

Also, could roomie be induced to develop her own nice relationship with your cat? Just like a stepparent, maybe she needs to take kitty out for the proverbial ice-cream cone, just the two of them and bond.

If you send out the comforter, find someone who has expertise in cleaning up pet odors, not just any dry cleaners. You might have better luck looking for carpet cleaners.

For the cat, try Cosequin. Do a search for my recent thread.

Thanks all!

So verdict is in, and $210 later we have a UTI; positive bacteria in his urine, plus all his symptoms make sense. So a 14 day of antibiotics, increase his wet food, and maybe try a cranberry kitty supplement.

Strangely enough, Allen looooooooves to sleep on roomie’s bed. I’d come home and find him nestled in the comforter sleeping. She didn’t seem to mind, but for now we are keeping her doors closed.

Glad you’ve got kitty sorted out.

I know you feel guilty, but stuff happens. Years ago, my roommates cat peed all over my bed, even though he liked me and sometimes slept with me. Some weird territorial/anxiety thing. I didn’t take it personally. My roommate was not as thoughtful as you are and pretty much just said “Oh, well”. I love all the critters, so I didn’t get mad…who can be mad at a cat? Everything cleaned up OK…I washed all the bedding at the laundromat, with some vinegar. For the mattress, SOAK it in that Nature’s Miracle stuff, all the way through. Then stick it out in the sun to dry. Sunshine is great for removing pee odors (and bacteria that causes odors).
