I’ve been searching the web for ideas/items that would help my cat pass hard stool. Or something that would soften the stool?? We’ve got dolculax (sp?), what do cats have?
My old cat is on the prescription drug Cisapride and for a few days every couple of weeks I give him slippery elm. What about just putting a bit of mineral oil in his food? He’s 18yo, so things inside are slowing down, but I’d like to keep him comfortable as long as I can.
Pumpkin. My vet just “prescribed” it for my cat - helps with hair balls AND for diarrhea too. Dogs as well. Plain old canned pumpkin. My elderly cat ate it at first, but now I add some butter to get her to eat a bit more. Just a teaspoon or so a day.

Years ago (thinking 10), there was a product called Tonic Lax. It was highly palatable to cats, even the old anorexic kitties loved it. Not sure if its still available or not.

My kitty gets a little backed up sometimes, and I either feed him canned pumpkin, Metamucil, or flaxseed meal mixed in with some wet food when it happens. I also add a little extra water to the wet food, and all of them seem to work pretty well.
Pumpkin?? I would never have thought of that, but I’ll give it a go. I almost tried the metamucil, but couldn’t find anything that said how much for a 14lb cat. Thanks all 
I have my oldster with this issue, on 1/4 teaspoon of miralax once a day. He hasn’t got backed up since.
1/4 teaspoon Walgreen’s “Smoothlax” (Polyethylene Glycol 3350) top dressed on 1/3 of 5.5 ounce can of Wellness 3 times per day has resolved the same problem with our geriatric girl. So easy and inexpensive. Found this on the interent and has worked great for a year. Just pulls water into the intestine to alleviate dry stools. I have heard that the pumpkin works well too. Some divide those big cans up and freeze in small portions. Thaw a few days worth as needed. And, of course, feed only wet food, not dry kibble at all.
You can try psyllium too, which is probably the main ingredient in some of the suggestions above. Psyllium capsules are cheap.
My monster siamese (22 lbs and slimming down very …slowly…) has megacolon and constipation issues. He is on Lactulose to keep his stool soft and Cisapride to keep him moving. Not allowed any dry food…which severely pisses off the other 6 members of the Siamese Mafia. Who all LOVE dry food and have no bowel issues.
the game is to get the 6 happily fed…and keep the elephant on a diet.
lactulose is a clear tasteless liquid you drip on the food…and it works very well.
Our vet clinic recommends miralax - @ 1/4 tsp. per day. just mix it in some canned food. Make sure the cat has plenty of water too.
Do NOT put your cat on mineral oil!!! Cats tend to aspirate it and get lipoid accumulation in their lungs - NOT GOOD!!!
You can feed them wet food, or pumpkin baby food if they’ll eat it. Best to get vet advice - not all constipation issues are the same, and it can be dangerous to put your cat on a prokinetic (GI rupture) for some cases.
My vet recommended Miralax, as suggested above. Approximately 1/4 tsp per day. Mix with as much water as you need to, and I dose it, to make sure it goes in.
My cat has been constipated since breaking his leg and being immobile, and this was the vet’s advice. Unfortunately it didn’t work, since the cat could not get into the right position, and he ended up needing the vet to give him an enema.
My old guy is on Cisapride, vet said the constipation is due to low gut motility. I am going to ask him about these ideas. The meds help him poop, but many times the stool is hard and very dark.
He is on canned food and I add water. He also gets tuna oil a couple of times a week. The other cats eat the fish after he has sucked all the moisture out of it.
