Cat Tree for Large Cats?

I am looking for a new cat tree for our 2 cats. The one we have currently is several years old and definitely showing its age. The problem that I have run into is that all the cat trees I see seem to be built for kittens and really small cats.

We have 2 cats, one is less than 7lbs (I call her a mini Maine Coon-no idea what she actually is since she was a drop off). The other is a 13lb (not fat) male Tabby cat.

They both love their cat tree, but we had to remove the top perch because it wobbled alarmingly  when the big cat would climb up there (graceful is not a word I would use to describe him ).

Does anyone know of a good source of sturdy cat trees? Bonus points if the parts are large enough to accommodate a large cat, although he’s happy to squeeze himself into less than ideal spaces!

Armacat has a good product. I have one, that works for several cats of different sizes, and has lasted for several years. I think what you need is something along the lines of this, which has a larger base than most. The one I linked to is a weird color, though and you would probably be able to find one that isn’t so ā€œbrightā€

I have 4 indoor cats. The largest is 18 lbs and the smallest is 13.5 lbs.

I bought this cat tree 8 months ago and it has held up really well. It’s very sturdy and the perches and houses are large enough to fit my cats (the 18 lb ex feral tomcat hangs over the sides a bit but he doesn’t seem to mind. The other 3 fit fine). It has hardware so it can be bolted to the wall.

I have cat shelves in the room with the cat tree and the cats chase each other running up the tree, across the fireplace mantle and over to the shelves and back around and that tree is still standing and in one piece!

The base isn’t the problem, the main part of the cat tree is very sturdy. The problem is the perches that are high up, with only a support in the center they tend to rock a lot when a large clumsy cat is trying to claw his way up.

Maybe I just need to buy whichever cat tree I like and add my own reinforcement to it.

I just bought this for my 4 terrors!! I have everything from a 2lb kitten to a 13lb 7month old. I’m sure they’ll love it. Merry christmas cat children

Check your local ad Facebooks (flea market, swap meet, stuff for sale, those are some of the labels I’ve seen my local ones go by on Facebook) for someone local who makes cat trees. There was a guy doing that here for a while and selling them out of his truck at a local gas station. His were sturdy, large, even oversized, and built to take large cats’ abuse. His prices were very reasonable, like $100 for a really nice, tall tree. Less than half of what online shops wanted for the same thing, and far better than the $100 trees sold by local pet stores.

My Boston from Kitty Mansions has held up well and isn’t at all wobbly. Pilgrim (15 pounds) has often been to the tippy top. Pilgrim and Pharaoh together have been in the tippy top.

Can’t quite hold 3 up there, but the problem was space, not stability. It never shifted with this.

Anything made by Molly and Friends is phenomenal they will even custom build you anything to order. They also sell certain models to retail giants. I have three cats, two large beasts and one petite one and they go wild on their cat furniture. My Molly and Friends one still looks brand new. They can run and dive on it and that sucker does NOT rock.

They are SUPER expensive but solid wood with cedar posts.

I second Kitty Mansions.

I just bought a cat tree for my guys, a 16lb Maine coon mix(?) and a 14lb dsh. I went with the Whisker City Supper Retreat. It’s big enough for both of them to lay on at the same time and doesn’t wobble when they’re on the top level like the last one did (took that one back to the store). Plus, it was on sale at petsmart for $80.

My only complaint is that the top shelf doesn’t have carpet on the bottom, instead it’s like white coated particle board (like what inexpensive closet storage systems are made out of). It didn’t seem very comfortable so I tossed and old sweater and scarf up there and the boys love curling up there now.

The Maine Coon people use Furwood Forest, they are absolutely suitable for large cats AND really nice looking (bonus round if it is in main room in the house, let’s face it, cat trees are not always the most attractive thing).

Here’s mine with 2 Maine Coons (23 & 17lbs - hint, neither are fat and the 17lb one’s nickname is ā€œskelatorā€ - they are just LARGE) and SBC (small black cat, who is probably just a slightly less than average size cat)

If you are near Atlanta, he is on the north side and he does go to a lot of cat shows in the southeast, so you might be able to meet up or buy one there.

and this is why Maine Coon owners don’t have regular cat trees with regular size bases. This happened when Zifu (still not full grown) did an enthusiastic speed ascent. How it DIDN’T go through the window is still a mystery to me!

Your Maine Coon’s are gorgeous, I have a soft spot for large kitties.

Those cat trees are awesome, but unfortunately I’m not anywhere near Atlanta, and they are definitely out of the budget. My father builds things for a living (well, more like remodels them) I may have to request that he build me a properly sturdy tree for Christmas!

yes, if you have someone with some skills, then you can pick out your own carpet so it might even match the decor a little better (plus I think the low pile carpet looks better and holds up longer)

Anyone have a recommendation for a large cat hammock? One of those low-to-the-ground jobbies that looks like a foot stool, but with a ā€œswingā€ in the middle. I recently bought one, but it’s only about a foot across and neither of my moderately-sized boys will use it.

My husband isn’t particularly handy and he built a 6 foot tall cat tower monstrosity that easily holds my 35lb toddler! He used 2x2s for the corners and 3/4 inch plywood for the shelves. We bought a cheap area rug and some sisal rope. We didn’t buy nearly enough rope to cover all of the posts but that turned out to be a good thing - our kitty prefers the bare wood! Less than $100 for all of the materials and it is SOLID.

We have two awesome cat trees, one was from Craigslist and the other was a gift, both built from actual trees by someone local. They are nice enough to have in the kitchen and living room, well balanced and sturdy enough to withstand a LOT of daily use from the group (7 lb to 17 lb). I don’t have a picture I can easily share, but they are made from actual trees, have several perches but no hidey-holes, and very sturdy, broad bases. One is getting a little wobbly, but that’s the one from Craigslist and we’ve probably had it almost 10 years.

To be honest there are a lot of cat trees for huge cats. Personally, I have Maine Coon and you don’t even understand how big it is… Seriously, my ā€œPuggewā€ (it’s the name of my cat) has about 38 lbs and it was so difficult to search a cat tree for him. Seriously, I’ve never faced such a difficult task, but, thank heaven I found an article about cat trees for maine coons and due to that article I found a good option, so I bought Corner Cat XXL Cat Tree for Large Cats and it has dimensions 59ā€Ā x 24ā€Ā x 22ā€Ā, and, thank heaven, my cat liked it, because every time he feels bored he comes to me and sits on my knees (ugh, it’s so difficult to cope with the pressure…)

Buy wood and make your own. My dad made me one for Christmas one year. It’s awesome and will last forever. I do not want carpeting on my cat house. I have one cat that eats strings off of carpeting. Especially frayed strings. I’ve added two additional sleeping houses that stack on top of each other. Those go next to the fireplace.
