Cat with IBS/IBD - What to do?

I have a little hairless Sphynx kitty who I got a few months ago from a not great situation. Her breeder called me knowing I have breed experience and that I’d be willing to take in an adult cat and asked if I could help her out. I told her I’d go take a look and see what I could do. The person who had the cat had three little kids under 7 and they tormented this poor cat. She was super stressed in that situation and I agreed to bring her home. Lucy is 2 years old and about 4 pounds. Breeder bred her once last year which ended in an emergency C-section/spay. The people I got her from were feeding her Kitten Chow and I feed EVO grain-free Chicken & Turkey to my other Sphynx. Ever since I brought her home, she’s had bouts of horrible, stinky, explosive diarrhea. I figured at first it was transitional stress/new food, but after 2 weeks we took her to the vet. He gave flagyl and prednisone, advised to feed a high fiber (hairball) food and reevaluate in a few weeks. No marked improvement with this. FIP test came back negative. Ultrasound showed some minor inflammation in the intestines. I’ve tried adding fiber to her food through psyllium husk powder and canned pumpkin which she will eat readily but we still have the runs. Sometimes she can’t make it to the boxes, sometimes she poos all over herself. I’ve spent more time in the past two months scrubbing floors, carpets and washing bedding because of the poop-trail. Baby wipes are strategically placed throughout the house for Lucy bum cleaning. She’s not thriving and is losing weight rapidly. She has a distended abdomen indicative of nutritional deficiencies. I can see every rib and vertebrae on this little thing. Vet is stumped & I’m heartbroken. I’m thinking about possibly switching her to a raw food diet to see if it helps even though it’s low fiber. Has anyone been through chronic diarrhea with their cat and won the battle? What worked for you? Please give me some ideas because if I don’t start getting this under control I fear that she’s not going to make it. :frowning:

My IBD cat does beautifully on rabbit. It’s a total bear to source, though, and we’re trying her on buffalo. Jury is still out on if that will work.

I’d get your kitty on an IBD diet post haste. Start with Z/D. I really dislike the prescription diets, but it sounds like you need something non reactive ASAP, and that will do it. Once she’s calmed down and had gained a bit, try novel proteins.

Some brands to look at, off the top of my head):

Hound & Gatos (rabbit, pork)
Wild Calling (rabbit, buffalo)
EVO (venison)
Evangers (pheasant, all sort of other weird stuff)

I’d also look to feed her wet. You just can’t find a dry food that is meat ONLY like you can in the wet foods. Give her as little to react to as possible.

Good luck!

I have a cat with IBD and he’s doing very well lately. Normal poop - hallelujah!!

He’s on Prednisone and either eats raw food or one of the few brands without carageenan in it. Rabbit, venison, or lamb. No dry, just canned or raw.

He had horrible diarrhea and when the vet examined him he said that his intestines were so inflammed they felt like strands of rope. He put him on Prednisone and he’s done quite well on it. He started off at 5 mgs twice a day and now it’s 5 mgs am and 2.5 pm.

He’s been on it since September and I imagine we’ll try tapering the dosage again soon. I don’t think he’ll ever get as low as the vet wants but we’ll just take it as it goes.

Good luck!

My IBD cat does beautifully on venison. You can search for my past posts on this or pm me for details. He’s eating “normal” food now and his gut is (knock on wood) very quiet and stable. It took a good 4-6 months to get him straightened out though.

Which venison do you use, Jen-s? If buffalo doesn’t work for Portia, I may try venison before breaking down and just doing raw rabbit from hare today…

I have an IBS kitty but he is not as bad off as yours. From what I read when he was first diagnosed, chicken is a no-no. My kitty though is very fickle. Instinct Limited Ingredient Lamb formula, Instinct Limited Ingredient Salmon formule, Soulistic Tuna in Pumpkin Soup, Core Wellness Lamb Beef & Venision and Blue Buffalo Rocky Mountain Red Meat Recipe are the only ones he will eat that has little if any chicken product in it. He does get a little Meow Mix dry food but mostly a handful here and there since he begs for it. If I feed him just those brands flavors little to no diarrhea but if I add his favorite food of all time, Purrfect Bistro Turducken, oh boy stand back. Make sure she is staying hydrated though with the diarrhea. Good luck, it is frustrating.
