Cat with irritated paw pad. What do I put on it?

Junior, the awesome barn cat,

has an irritated paw pad on his right front. Its the 4th of July so vet is not open and its not worthy of emergency vet care. However, it is bothering him and I was wondering if there is anything I can put on it to soothe it. He has redness and irritation deep between his toes and of course he is licking it. I have antibiotic ointment, cortisone cream, corona, and access to anything I can find at the drugstore.

My concern is that anything I put on his foot will end up in his mouth as he just can’t stop licking. Any suggestions? If he is not better tomorrow I will be taking him in to the vet.

Plain old neosporin should work with vet wrap around it. The cat will ultimately pull it off but if you wrap it well you can buy enough time to give it a chance to soak in some. If your cat gets the wrap off just wipe the remainder off; anything else the cat licks should be minimal.

No suggestions. He is awesome. What is going on with his left eye in the pic though?
My kitty’s eye looks similar.

Second on the Neosporin. What a cutie-- that face is adorable!

Do you have any bitter apple? You could try the neosporin and then spray the paw with bitter apple to prevent the licking.

I think it was just mildly irritated at the time the pic was made. He is at the vet’s office in that photo. He loves to lay in their scales.

Here he is in his Easter costume.
