Cats and grass??

When our “escape artist” house cat gets/sneaks/bolts out of the door he runs out into the grass and starts mowing like a Clydesdale!! I was thinking of transplanting some grass into a flower pot and putting it “safely” inside the house. Thoughts??

Buy cat grass at the pet store …it’s safe … expensive but safer IMHO

adding it’s usually oat grass - get oats grow your own and save $

I did this for awhile - grew tired of it - now just occasionally purchase some for my cats for a treat .

The cat grass that I grew was wheat grass. I got a kit at the pet store, but wheat seeds for people would work just as well.

I buy organic wheat grass in the produce section of the grocery store. I’ve found it to be cheaper than the pots of grass at the pet stores. I buy one about every 3 weeks. I pay $1.99 for a 5" pot

My cats always liked grass, and so does my dog. In the winter, I grow grass inside for the dog, or she’ll be trying to squeeze under my DH’s trailer to find some dead stuff when there is snow on the ground. A shallow pot, some potting soil, filtered sunlight and some wheat grass seed is by far the cheapest way to go. It will die off every 2-3 weeks as it exhausts the nutrients in the soil and turns brown. You want hard winter wheat seed, you can order small amounts on Amazon for $$$ or just go to an Ag store and buy a huge bag cheap ;). Soak it before planting so it germinates quickly. If I start a second tray a week to 10 days after I plant the first, I can have a constant supply of indoor grass. Any the pets don’t eat can be turned into wheat grass juice, if you are into that. I’m not.

Cat grass can be oat, wheat, barley, or rye seed or a mix of the listed.

I either seed it myself or buy it from the stores when I get lazy, depends on their moods and digestive habits whether they’re interested in it or not.

I also buy catnip plants for them, which they love. I recently bought a more expensive CatMint plant that that I’ve never tried on them before, I’m letting grow a bit more before I unleash the mob on it. It doesn’t smell as strong as the original catnip plant.

I once bought cat grass for my cats after I brought them inside to stay. Although they had often eaten the grass on our lawn, they never touched the indoor potted stuff.

Maybe I will buy them a catnip plant for this summer.

Catmint is a nice plant! We’ve always had some out in the yard, it’s perennial, so, even here with our harsh winters, it only needs to be planted once. The purple flowers are pretty. My cats did like it, but they didn’t go as nutty over it as they did catnip, which I considered a good thing ;). They’d snack on it once in a while, rather than trash the whole plant like they sometimes did with catnip. It is also really good in iced tea for humans.

It spreads, like any mint, so if you plant it outside in a garden, be aware that it will try to take over.

Thanks for that information, it should look nice in their outside enclosure when I get it built.
