Cats: mast cell tumors

Would like more info/experiences about cats with mast cell tumors. Vet(cat specialist) says there are very little chance of matastasis and its not leathal in cats. She said it releases histamine and gets itchy, highly vascular.

Miloe has a pea size one in his ear canal, not near eardrum or anything vital. So surgery is out as there is no margin tissue to be able to clear it.

Currently on 5mg prednisone a day to keep the itchies away and hopefully shrink it, hes been on it a few weeks

Anyone have experience??

Most cutaneous MCTs in cats are not a big deal (although I have seen photos of some nasty ones). I have a cat with them - he actually developed them while on chemo for lymphoma! - and they haven’t been an issue. The first few we removed; but he had so many little bumps all over him that we couldn’t take them all off. So my treatment plan is benign neglect  They do come and go, appear and then regress. At one point we aspirated his spleen to make sure it wasn’t contributing to the problem, and it was fine. Your cat’s tumor could very well shrink or go away completely

There’s lots of treatment options including neglect. Best to talk to your vet and potentially a specialist regarding what treatment …or not treatment…is best for your cat.

I know one who has them all over his spleen. A year ago cat had a spleenectomy and is doing great. Does always have a few random circulating mast cells in her peripheral blood, but no other symptoms of major metastasis.

Thanks guys! The reason we’re doing steroids is he was scratching it and it was bothering him, it bled a bit too. He seems to be doing ok now, not walking around with one flat ear.

Apparently its common in older siamese

Pilling cats is just soo much fun! Not, and pill pockets lost the novelty after one pill
