Cats that eat things they shouldn't

My cats drive me absolutely nuts. They always manage to get into something they shouldn’t.

I had one cat with Pica. She would literally eat newspaper. Anything paper she would eat corners off of. She passed away from cancer, but she did have a lot of GI upsets in the years prior. Probably from eating things that she shouldn’t. She chewed through wires- my kindle charger, mouse, headphones, and more earbuds then i could count. I was terrified she would electrocute herself.

Today I walked into the kitchen and my other cat was eating the plastic mesh wrapping on the cantaloupe! There is a hole in it. I don’t know if he just ripped it or if/how much he swallowed. Plus the mesh wrapping was just ripped from the roll to begin with so i don’t know if the jagged ends are from him chewing or them ripping it from the roll.

I don’t know if I should rush him to the vet or just watch him for the next 24 hours. He couldn’t have been chewing on it for more then a minute… It makes me think a house environment just isn’t healthy for cats.

I’ve caught my other cat eating carpet fibers - i had to remove all the carpeting from the cat tree, and all cat scratching posts have been moved to the attic because they all are shredded and have dangling strings… Nothing I can do about the carpet flooring though.

We had a hole in the bathroom wall from a leaking pipe. Before that was repaired, I caught one cat eating a piece of insulation.

I swear my cats are trying to kill themselves. It’s enough to make me consider insurance for foreign body ingestion! It’s not like they don’t get fed enough! I don’t know how they haven’t seriously injured themselves yet.

I never knew cats to eat weird things until Maximus Imperius arrived . . .

So far, we’ve been through 3 TV cables, 3 satellite receiver cables, 5 phone charging cables, and 2 Nook cables. So far as I know, no one has been electrocuted, though I have no idea how. He eats bubble wrap - I can’t have it in the house. He eats any kind of plastic wraps. He will literally pull the safety loop off the bathroom cabinet door to get to my personal products AND EAT THE WRAPPERS. Sometimes I come home to find them scattered all over the house! And tissue paper. He LOVES tissue paper. (He doesn’t eat Kleenexes, but he does pull them out of the box - he watched me do it once and the next thing I knew, he was digging into that box, pulling them out with his claws one by one by one!)

I keep thinking I’ll have to have emergency surgery done on him someday . . . but somehow, he always digests it just fine!

Ha ha ha ha I was just having this convo with my Mama yesterday. Her cats seem to have a knack for eating all sorts of things they shouldn’t. She pitches a fit each time she comes to my house for doing things like leaving my shoes by the door bc she thinks the cats will eat the laces.

My cats don’t really mess with anything. One cat will get on the kitchen counter which drives me crazy but he’s just looking for any morsels or if a dish is in the sink

could it be something lacking in the diet? I would definitely ask the vet. Right away.

I have one who’s thing is shoe laces. No shoes are safe–they have to all be locked away–and we still order laces by the 20 pack. Hoodie strings, too.

Another looooooves to lick tape. Especially the paper tape with the little strings in it.

Cats really are weirdos!

Well I was wrong. I thought I had gotten to him before he ate any. He threw up a large wad of green mesh wrapping. I’m hoping that was all and there isn’t more in him. But he ate breakfast and seems just fine. So fingers crossed that is all.

At this rate I’m going to go buy foreign body insurance.

John Coltrane aka The Hoover will eat anything resembling food off the kitchen floor yet will not eat any human food offered to him.

Ella will chew on anything wooden. Almost every piece of soft wooden furniture or oranament in my house has her chew marks on them.

Dizzy will chew on and also ingest anything foam or cork like. Exercise mats must be hidden away, rubber/foam bottomed mats are a target, weather stripping, rubber balls and cardboard is a favourite. He will also go after anything with tape on it, he enjoys peeling it off and dropping it on the floor.

Jesse James eats (and usually subsequently barfs) hay. I live on a farm. There’s always hay getting tracked in…
