CBD oil for seizures in dogs???

In the ER side of my life, we are seeing very, very prolonged sedation in pets who get in to some of the medical marijuana blends. Much more severe than recreational marijuana

Marshfield, that’s very interesting. One of the things associated with CBD use in humans is the need for less of any medication the person is on. In particular, lesser doses of chemotherapy have been mentioned. I have no ides if this has been or is being studied in a proper scientific manner, but it seems it should be.

So do you think it’s because people are getting the THC and non-THC types mixed up or that they are not being carefully produced so they are inconsistent? I know someone that was “getting” CBD oil with THC from a source out of state. I’m assuming that is illegal and definitely would not be something you would want to give your dog.

I presume inconsistency with production, but nobody ever brings the packaging in with them. So, I haven’t seen any labels to be able to compare.

So CBD cures cancer as well?

Very funny Canadian Trotter! No most definitely NOT saying that, and as I noted real scientific studies need to be done on the effect of CBD on other meds taken concurrently. Just found it interesting that there was an anecdotal comment by Marshfield that sedation is prolonged if the animal has CBD on board.

For the record, I think CBD may have some therapeutic value but it is not well studied and therefore not well defined. And the product variability is ridiculous. If a good, consistent product can be found and used under well-defined parameters it may be worth trying for certain limited issues.

But I don’t believe all the hype.

How do you switch them from the CBD from their prescriptions? Our dog is on 2 different meds to keep seizures at bay. It took us a while to get to the “right” combo and have had minimal issues since. I would be afraid to mess with that. ?

Why does one need to switch? Can’t the CBD just be added on?
I use it in my ibd, acromegaly/diabetes cat. He catches the drops right from the dropper- he likes it that much. I believe it has helped, but wouldn’t necessarily assume it replaces “traditional” meds, rather it complements them, perhaps allowing greater relief of associated symptoms, or perhaps allowing that relief on less meds.

Update. We are approaching 90 days and are still seizure free on a twice daily dose of CBD oil!! Actually giving 1/2 of the original dose. She is full of pep and has a great appetite…and NO seizures!! Yippee!!

That’s great news and quite similar to the experience I had using cbd oil for my dog with seizures.

What a well kept secret!!

Which one are you using? I am considering it from my arthritic senior. He has a Rimadyl Rx but he isn’t supposed to get it every day, like arthritis only happens occasionally or something?

The pharmacist at our local Walmart has a distributing company here in Tx. called “Hempworx”. I got one bottle from him…30 ml for $69.95…then went on Amazon and got some for hubby and me…“CBD oil” …$44.00 for 60 ml. There are MANY products offered…you have to make sure f what you are getting. “Hemp Oil” or “CBD tincture” are a much weaker solution! I have bummed up knees from 40 years of galloping TB race horses…I “think” I see an improvement in my pain after 29 days of CBD oil.

Hi Crosscreeksh. The real keys in assessing CBD preps are checking the labels carefully to see how much THC (the product of the plant that could get one high) is in the CBD product as well as looking at the concentration of CBD ie: how many mgs per ml. The label on mine specified how many mgs of CBD there were in the bottle and how many ml in there as well so I did the math to get the desired dose. A good quality product should have very little THC.

FWIW, my experience was that CBD worked within a week, if not sooner.

Also note that there is anecdotal evidence (supposedly undergoing controlled studies) that CBD causes greater response to concurrent meds. It has been said that chemo patients taking CBD need less chemo to get the same therapeutic response and the same with certain psych meds. I only mention this because someone above asked about transitioning from several meds to CBD.

@frugalannie I’m so new to the CBD thing, and you seem to know your stuff! Feel to PM if you wish or continue here. I can easily get pretty much any CBD variety in my state (we are in the everGREEN state ), and want to try something for my old dog. However, there are so many MLM sellers who hype their products and the prices seem ridiculous and vary widely.

My knowledge of products comes from an RN who has advanced education in cannabis by which I mean not just ingesting it (who new there was such a thing?). He and others are just finishing the process to be licensed as a testing lab, and to produce medical marijuana. They suggested Flora Sophia Full Spectrum Hemp Extract, of which I take about 7 mgs in the evening before bed. They had suggested 15 mgs, but half that works for me. YMMV. I just dropper the amount I’m taking under my tongue: about 0.12 ml, and then swallow it after a couple of minutes.

For the dog I use CannaDrops, 3 drops for a 22 lb 18yo Cairn which equals about 1.2 mgs. I found the product through a veterinarian. It doesn’t make him pain free, but it makes his arthritis tolerable. Instead of being three legged, he is 1-2/5 lame if that helps.

Happy to try to answer any other questions, but that pretty much sums up what I know.

Thank you for this input!! It is such an open/unknown treatment!! I appreciate not having to deal with a 140 pound seizuring dog (clusters of 8-10 per day every 4-5 weeks)…and she seems happier, with more pep, too!

OP, which one did you choose from Amz? Are you now giving that to the pup? Our mini Aussie just started having multiple seizures in a day, starting yesterday…He has them almost every 20 mins. We took him to the doggy ER last night, got a prescrip for Levetiracetam but I’d prefer to do more natural stuff if he can handle it…so many choices, it’s good to know which ones work for folks

This type of seizure disorder requires a serious diagnosis and treatment, not herbal remedies from Amazon.

Seriously - every 20 minutes - I would think brain tumor or something very significant. Not idiopathic epilepsy. I would get a referral to a neurologist asap.

I LOVE what CBD oil does for my whippet!!! He has cancer, arthritis, freaks with any loud noises, and just got over a bad episode of canine vestibular. In just one week he anxiety has dropped tremendously which is amazing since it has rained and thundered the whole week and didn’t pace or whine, just hung out with me and my other pooch… His gate is improving which tells me it is helping with inflammation in his hind end. Could not be happier!!! oh, 250mg and two drops only per day.
