Cellphone app to track your ride route/time/distance

Does anyone use a cellphone app to track ride stats and produce a map of your ride?

A friend has Map My Ride https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapmyride.android2&hl=en

Another person said he used GPS Stone (which appears to be iphone only).

What do you use? What do you like or dislike about it?

I use endomondo and really like it. It’s free and I like how I can check out my splits and compare to friends if I want. I also have it set on my husband’s phone so that if (god forbid) something ever happened to me out on trail, he could find me through the GPS. Also have find my iPhone for that too.

The free version of Map My Run will give you basic stats route, length, overall time, climbs, etc.

I just downloaded Track My Hack from Woof products (also free). You can add pics of your horses and tag certain hacks with different horses. I’ve played with it a bit, but haven’t actually used it yet.

As an aside, I once used Map My Run to track a hill gallop. I got an email the next day congratulating me for the fasted ascent in the country, LOL!

I also use Endomondo. I put it on even in the arena to see how far we’ve gone and whatnot even when I’m schooling dressage or jumping.

How do these apps affect battery life?

I’ve noticed when I run the Navigation mode in the car it will drain the battery of my Razr relatively quickly (3-4 hours) unless I’m plugged into the 12v socket. That’s pretty much a “deal breaker” for me. I do have an auxiliary battery pack that will recharge the phone so I could do it.

Would the app really killing the battery be an argument for a stand alone GPS?

G.

I use Gazelle
It tracks your time, distance, minutes per mile, speed, and creates a map.
You can also set it to tell you updates on your stats at regular intervals.
It works well in conjunction with jango or pandora too

I use Sportstracker. IAt does everything, avg speed, avg pace, splits, elevation, time distance and a map. It keeps a diary, can be shared w others etc etc. I love it. Free.

I use the free version of EveryTrail

It will upload your trail to an internet website where you can share it. If you take photos with your phone, it will place the photos on the trail using the GPS coordinates that the iphone embeds in the photo. Trails, elevation, distance, time are all recorded.

As far as battery, Any of these programs that uses the gps feature of your phone will rapidly eat the battery. I have tried Edmondo, Everytrail MotionX and several others and they all consume batteries

Here is a recent ride I did near Bryce Canyon

There are so many options! I use Strava, originally designed for cycling. I do keep my rides private so I don’t show up on the leader boards, as people don’t like when a horse completely beats their uphill climb!

I also use MotionX, which I like because I can download maps into my phone for when there is no service. Many canyons around here have no reliable cell service.

I recently used Strava for a 50 mile endurance ride. It tracked me for 11 hours, I still had battery left. I did turn off wifi and all other apps. I am using an iPhone 4S and have been really happy with battery life.

Used RunKeeper today and was pretty impressed with that one too.

I use everytrail, which cost about $3 for my Android. It works great, virtually everywhere and is relatively accurate. With my Motorola Electrify I’m good for about 5-6 hours with the gps and everytrail running, using the camera, talking, texting, facebooking all occasionally.

Here’s my ride last Friday -

I use the free version of every trail too and have been happy with it, though the options to see your ride stats etc can be hard to find at first.

Another vote for Endomundo…

Thank you all! I will be checking these out.

Endomundo for me as well.

I found Endomondo (free version) to be really fluke-y – lots of random stoppages and at last use, was making my phone vibrate every couple of seconds for no apparent reason. Mileage (heh!) may vary.

After trying out multiple free apps simultaneously, I have found that Map My Ride has the most accurate mileage recording. Others were shorting the ride by over 10% ! Endomondo (which I previously used, and liked the layout) was the worst for shorting mileage. I think it has to do with how frequently the GPS checks location? It was worse on twisty trails.

Can anybody comment on how well any of these various programs handle riding in heavily wooded areas? I guess that is probably more a function of what type of phone you are using and its particular GPS capabilities… Quite a few years ago, before smartphones, I bought a GPS made for hikers, hoping I could map trails and specific foxhunting routes. I found out really quickly that I lost signal so often that tracking became really poor. Our hunt country has lots of hills, not so great cell signal reception and lots of trees. I gave up on that GPS long ago, but am now really interested in this thread because I would like to try again using my iPhone.

Thanks if anybody has any suggestions!

I also love Endomondo. It has worked well everywhere I have used it including mountain trails. I put the phone in airplane mode and I have completed a 50 with it on. Great app!
