I have a horse that’s on his second 14-day round of antibiotics due to cellulitis. This weekend, we noticed on the affected hind leg that he’s losing his hair on his lower part of the leg. I have a call in with my vet, but I’m still waiting to hear back. Is this a known issue? So far the hair loss is about 8" long and if you gently rub the leg, more hair comes off.
Yep
Any time something swells enough, hair can fall out. So it’s not really about cellulitis specifically, and more about swelling in general.
A nasty fly bite that results in swelling on the rump, can cause hair to fall out around it. One of our cats recently got a bit of a claw puncture wound on the top of her head, the swelling wasn’t huge, but enough that the hair fell out.
PLUS, hair is starting to shed now, so that’s just exacerbating things
Yes absolutely and unfortunately.
Thank, you all. The swelling has gone down, but not completely. Always something with the ponies.
