Champion foods axes Chewy

according to an email I received, Champion Pet Foods have canceled their contract for Orijen and Arcana distribution thru Chewy.com
Champion says its because Chewy was sold to Petsmart and Champion’s pet food will only be distributed thru independent pet stores. This is the pot calling the kettle black. Champion is complaining about Petsmart buying Chewy but Champion was sold to Bedford Capital, a hedge fund, a couple of yrs ago when the father retired and the 2 brothers couldnt agree about running it. Welcome to corporate America. Take notice there is no announcement of Champion canceling with Amazon. You cant make this stuff up.

Evidently Champion isn’t the only one.

I wonder if this move will backfire on them and the other companies when people who bought their foods through chewy.com now stop buying it because it was easier to order through chewy.com (free shipping, shipping time, etc.)? It’s admirable to want to sell your products only through businesses who know their (and your) business; OTOH it’s just good business sense to sell your products through companies who have the most customers for the most reasons. As long as you’re not compromising your integrity (or that of your product).

I mean “you” in the general sense, not you personally, pezk.

Interestingly, I placed a $60 order with The Chewy today and they deducted $25 from my order. Didn’t say why, just said 50% savings on food up to $25.

I don’t see any of their foods sold directly by Amazon. They are all listed through third party sellers, which would be smaller independent businesses, but fulfilled by Amazon which means these businesses choose to have their stock stored and ship from Amazon warehouses.

Thats good to know

It’s typical. They thought they could ride the wave of the backlash against Petsmart buying Chewy…but newsflash, it might just come back to bite them in the butt. There’s not a lot worse than a hypocrite.

Champion has said multiple times that Amazon is not an authorized retailer of their foods and asked that if you see it on Amazon to alert them. They only sell through independent retailers.

I don’t think everyone understands how the Amazon third-party sellers work.

Just because you see it in an Amazon search and it ships Prime, does not mean it is sold directly by Amazon. When you open the item listing, you’ll see it says something like “Sold by Monster Pets and fulfilled by Amazon.” If you click “other sellers” or " 15 new from $x.xx" it will list all available sellers. I don’t see Amazon itself listed on any of them.

The reason it ships Prime and is labeled “fulfilled by Amazon” is because in some cases, these smaller third-party companies pay to have their stock stored and shipped from Amazon’s warehouse and to have Amazon handle the customer service.

The smaller company, Monster Pets or whichever, owns the stock and receives the money minus whatever they pay to have Amazon fulfill their orders

The vast majority of what you see on Amazon is either shipped from a third party directly or sold by a third party but fulfilled by Amazon.
