Change to Triple Crown Senior?

Hi all. Been thrilled that TSC now carries Triple Crown Senior. It’s been my feed of choice for years. But the boys aren’t cleaning it up like they used to. Does anyone know if it is a different milling source or change in ownership that has allowed the expanded distribution and perhaps a change in Ingredients? Don’t really want to switch. Ulcers are not a likely issue and this is definitely timed with the change from where I buy it. Thanks in advance.

Triple Crown is very serious about quality control.

TSC is not serious about rotating stock or appropriate storage or watching date stamps.

First place to is look is the date stamp. When was it milled, has it been sitting for a long time? Probably worth picking up a couple bags from a non TSC feed store, to see what the horses think of that.

Will do. They only just started carrying so hoping it’s not outdated. Bag material changed too- part of wondering if there is a new production facility Thanks!

TSC actually started carrying Triple Crown around the beginning of January, so the first thing I would do is checked the date code as we are almost to April.

TSC has never been and never will be my first choice for purchasing feed. Stock rotation has never been their forte, as well as issues with grain mites during warmer weather.

I’ve just switched my horse back to triple crown senior and have been buying from TSC. No quality issues so far. It moves really fast at my local stores though.

How old is too old, for TC Senior?

Save your bag, there’s numbers/date codes on it, then call Triple Crown Customer Service #- on their website. They will tell you how old the feed is and whether it was too old to sell.

This happened to me at a newer feed store here and they were selling really old TC products. Triple Crown sent me a
coupon for a couple new bags. And the feed store apparently was shut off from selling TC products.

Thanks all. Checked codes and late February and early March which seems acceptable to me?

My old fart ponies did this to me a few months ago…nothing to do with the mill change as my feed comes from independent dealer. I just grabbed a bag of Ultium and added a cup to each meal. I think they were just bored? We are now back to normal programming, TC Sr and TC 30.

Seems to be the norm for a lot of folks who feed TC Senior. I have never had a horse get bored with his/ her feed.

If you have spring grass coming in like I do, it can be surprising what horses will leave in favor for grazing.

My herd of (very piggy) boys are on TCS, and love it. But, as I turn them out on pasture for an hour or so per day while I prep their feed, they don’t come a’runnin like they used to. They’d rather stay on spring grass than have their breakfast.

When I deliver their breakfast to the pasture, they eat a few mouthfuls and then wander back to grazing.

I have to lead them in to their dry lot, and shut them off the pasture for them to eat their breakfast.

In a month, they’ll be hoovering their hard feed like they do all year, but the first month of spring grass… lordhelpus.

Thanks all for the input. The grass is pretty great right now, so probably a factor and i had been thinking of just grabbing some Ultium to test their palates. Of course, the mind always goes to ulcers, but (too long a list to explain why) i genuinely don’t think that’s the issue and I’ve dealt with them before. Guess i should just be happy that that feed bill will shrink! Hope everyone is hanging in there, crazy times.

My oldie stopped eating it in December. No idea why. I switched him to Purina Senior, which does not make me happy but does make him happy so…I’m going to try the TC again as I do feel it’s a better feed and I have to restrict his NSCs (cushings).

As an FYI, I recently, as in about a month ago, contacted TC to ask what they recommended as far as shelf life for their feeds (I feed Complete), as I wanted to buy more bags at a time. They said they recommend 60-90 days from the date of manufacture printed on the bag (located on the white tape at the bottom of each bag). I would expect the longer end of that in winter, the shorter end if you are in hot, humid summers.
