Charles Owen Halo

I just bought a Charles Owen Halo with MIPS about a month ago. It’s matte black with the gloss halo. Anyways, I had it between my legs while putting on my hairnet and it’s so slippery that it fell a short distance to the ground. When I picked it up, it was scratched in several places. With the price point and only falling a short distance, I’d think the helmet would have been fine. However, it looks like they’re not scratch resistant at all. Has anyone else had this happen or know what to do to get the scratches out? It looks like buffing them might make it worse due to another, lighter color underneath. Any advice is welcomed! It made me so sad!

Side note, I reached out to Dover and they will not help. I also reached out to Charles Owen to see what they say, but haven’t heard back yet.

Unless it was teflon coated why would you not think it would scratch? I would not expect the company to do anything for minor wear & tear.

Thank you for your ever so insightful knowledge. It would be more helpful if you could share how to buff them out or anything that could help the question at hand. Also, I added that for those who would direct me to the manufacturer or where I placed the order. SmartPak for example, are helpful with these things.

I would be very hesitant to put any sort of chemical on it or physically buff it down for safety reasons.

I did the same exact thing with the same helmet so just commiserating with you. I try to immediately put in the bag when I’m done with it. The good thing is when it’s on and you’re on a horse nobody can tell.

I would not expect the company or retailer to do anything for regular wear and tear - like dropping the helmet. That’s not their fault, and it doesn’t effect performance or protection.

Unfortunately scratches are a fact of life with the hard finish shells - the “velvet” or fabric outers are a tad more durable (though they get dirtier).

Scratch resistant does not equal scratch proof.

I would try some water or something mild like Murphy’s Oil Soap?

I’m sorry this happened to yours too! It’s very sad to watch in such a short period of time.

A few suggestions

  1. Black helmet cover for helmet with a brim
  2. black sharpie marker or black pencil
  3. black shoe polish on just the scratches

Agree that scratch resistant =/= scratch proof.

Chances are that the scratches are still invisible to anyone more than 10’ away even untreated in any way.
