Charles Owen MiPS helmet

Opinions and reviews? Is it worth the $ for the extra safety with the MIPS system for riding dressage and trail riding? (No jumping) I’m kind of attached to my basic Troxel helmets.

Hitting your head in an equestrian fall is likely to involve rotational forces whether your dressage horse stumbles or your trail horse spooks or you take a tumble toward a refused jump. It’s somewhat rare to fall head-first straight downward when you come off. MiPS is therefore likely to help offset some of the dangerous forces of head impact during a fall regardless of what kind of riding you do. Is it worth the $? That’s a matter of personal values, I suppose, but it’s probably not less worth it if you stick to dressage and trail riding than if you jump.

You may want to compare Trauma Void as well, if you’re looking to upgrade to MiPS technology.

I bought one last weekend at a LandSafe clinic and am really happy with it. It was the same price as my OneK, and the construction quality is better on the CO. I spent a long time talking through whether or not the MIPS was worth it and why with Danny, the former steeplechaser/eventer that teaches the clinic, (after already having done a lot of research myself into it) and came away thinking it was worth it. Worst case, I have an above-average helmet in terms of quality and safety testing and I’m out no more money vs. a non-MIPS helmet.

FWIW, it fit me very well, but it didn’t fit my barnmate at all. It wasn’t a sizing thing or a brand thing, other Charles Owen helmets like the Four Star fit like they were made for her. So definitely try before you buy (as you should with all helmets).

Second fall in 2 months off my Dressage horse so yes it’s worth it to get the newest safety measures.

Sounds like it’s worth the money to get a helmet with MIPS. Now…Charles Owen or TraumaVoid? Charles Owen is made in England. The Trauma Void is made in China…

Are you willing to toss and replace it after a minor fall?

A minor fall ???

I had the CO on order through SmartPak and never received it. I wanted the 6 5/8 oval and the order was cancelled as they don’t have that size(in the round). I had/have the Trauma Void Lynx and will be contacting them today about a replacement.

But yes helmets should be replaced every fall even though we grew up with uncertified helmets that we rarely replaced.

Yes, helmets should be replaced after any fall, including minor. That’s why you take care of them- no dropping, not leaving in a hot car, etc. No matter the brand.

As for the value- what’s your head worth? It’s a personal choice. The CO helmets, particularly the MYPS are the safest on the market.

For me- yes, it’s worth it.

Worth it, agreed!

I have the TraumaVoid Lynx, which is the adjustable fit model and I love it. I hope I never need to test its effectiveness, but I am glad for the extra safety performance if I do.

I’ve tried both the TraumaVoid, and just now, the CO skullcap with MIPS. Did not like the fit of either one. The TV seemd to sit more up on top of my head and felt like it would pop off in a crash. The CO came down more on my head, but stuck up a LOT over the crown of my head and made it feel top heavy. Sending it back. The CO was also slightly tight in the temples. I’m sticking with my OneKs until they can get this technology into a nicer-fitting helmet.

I have not tried the CO, but none of their ‘ordinary’ helmets fit me. I have small head (6 3/4)

The BOT EQ3 does not fit me at all. Yuk.

The newer BOT Lynx Small shape is good, but it was way too tight and left a red mark on my forehead after only a minute. The Medium is too big. Weird.

The new Tipperary Royal size Small is also a bit snug, but not as bad as the Lynx. Not sure how it would feel after an hour or two. The Medium is a wee tiny bit too big, but with a small foam shim it would probably be fine. Dunno.

For now I’m sticking with my wonderful, perfectly fitting IRH 4G.

Does anyone have pictures of this helmet on? I just ordered it and have until Wednesday to cancel should I choose to. I just cant find any photos of it on other than stock photos and I’m scared its gunna be funny looking.

Although I’m definitely a fan of the Troxels as well as the Ovation schooler, I do think MIPS is worth the extra money if you can get a well-fitting one that works for you.
