Ditto.
Even if it’s not required by the state; at the minimum, racetracks should be following this standard: http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/PDF/ROP/150-A2006-ROP.pdf

Oh how horrible. My condolences to everyone involved.
This is so sad. I’m so sorry for everyone involved. And, my heart breaks for those poor horses.
Oh my god. There is nothing, and I have been in/near two of these, worse than a barn fire. You cannot imagine the horror. The poor horses, and people who witnessed or worked to save them. The next thing is, when and how is relief being organized and what can be done for those who lost stock?
The number of equine fatalities has been “downgraded” to 27 from 40/41:

While still a huge tragedy, at least not as many perished as originally thought. Apparently some feared dead actually did make it out and were “on the run” as the above article mentions two being found near a 7-11.

Third Glance posted a link earlier that mentioned how to help:
Because so many of the horses lost were from small-scale operations, the Charles Town Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association is raising money to assist those horsemen effected. To make a donation, please call Patty or Barb at the HBPA office: 304 725-1535.
Having been through a barn fire where we lost 54 horses, my deepest sympathies to all the horses’ connections. It is beyond devastating.
Please donate if you can to help, it can be hard to pull oneself together after this kind of loss, but the incredible outpouring from the horse community at large makes it a little easier.
I know that there is no point talking about it after the fact but this was just a matter of time in my opinion. I have never seen barns in that bad of condition with live animals housed in them. I will say that the horseman did the best they could with what they had to work with keep their little corner of slum city clean and raked but the barns were truly held together with baling twine and old feed bags. I had to take an owner’s horse there after they closed Pimlico and I had nowhere to take them. I felt horrible unloading the horse and putting him in that hell hole. Godspeed, jingles to the connections. Hopefully their deaths weren’t in vain and better, safer barns will be built in their wake.

I am very sorry that these horses were lost. My sympathies to all their connections.
My Lord, how awful. My heart breaks for the animals that had to go through this terrifying ordeal and the owners who truly love their animals and the loss they are going through.
We had our eye on a horse there from the CANTER site and sure pray that he survived.
I will pass along donation requests.
My prayers are with everyone!
Is there a way to find out the names of all the horses that died?

Ditto this. Especially for those of us who were following horses.
Oh, god, CANTER Mid-Atlantic…what are the chances some of the horses in their listings were in those barns?

Yes, that would be great…we had our eye on one on CANTER and though there was no name to him, he was from Charlestown, and now that our Vet just got back to me and said “go look at him!” I’m worried sick! Will there be anyone that can do something to the Canter site to indicate? I realize with everything else it’s a lot and might not be possible but it would be nice to know if any of them were lost.
I’m going to call my CANTER friend now.
You can look at the scratch list to get some names. They ran the card Monday.

Doesn’t say deceased, I’m sure some were scratched for burns or panic. I’m also 100% certain that not every horse in that barn was on the card. But it’s a start.
Not sure how I feel about that; running the card after 27 horses died. Now, if all the proceeds from the day’s card went to the horse owners affected… I’d probably feel a lot better about it.
I read somewhere that none of the horses were entered for Monday.
Haven’t heard back from CANTER friend yet.
Eh, I freely admit: that is an assumption on my part, and 15 vet & steward scratches could have nothing to do with the fire… I read the a similar comment on bloodhorse I think, saying the racing wouldn’t be affected.
IMO, they probably looked to see if they still had populated races… but I woke up with a dose of cynical today.
Re: canter horses
Feel free to pm me the listings… At this time though I can only tell you if the horse is/was stabled in those barns. We should have more info later.
eta - horses who are pictured standing on concrete are NOT on the side of the road affected by this fire.

THIS. Absolutely.
Godspeed to all those loffly TBs and prayers for their connections.
I’m just heartbroken. My condolences to all involved and godspeed to those poor horses.
