Chaste Berry Powder/Pellets for moody mare? Not expecting miracles, but would like something to take the edge off her cycles

following up – my 20 year old mare is usually as close to a perfect horse as possible. However, she has come into season and is constantly screaming at/for the mare in the paddock next to her. Separated my mare to the other end of the farm (New England farm, so not all that large) when my mare started rearing and prancing like a stallion.

I just ordered chasteberry from Smartpak, but that takes 6-8 weeks to kick in, according to the info about it.

would/might the copper pipe idea work in this sort of situation?

@JeanM not sure… i tried the chaste berries and saw now noticeable difference. but recently I did try an interesting estrus suppression protocol. I gave my mare 3 cc oxytocin for 29 days straight. It did have to be injected IM. but its very easy and i did it with a 22 gauge needle to try to make it less painful. she actually just stood there and handled it well after getting a treat. According one study it will has been shown to shut down estrus for up to 90 days. So far i haven’t seen any signs of estrus since i did the 29 days in May. other than the cost of new needles, and syringes, ( actually reused the syringes for about 3 days, never the needles) and the 100 ml bottle of oxytocin was $9.00. it was very affordable. only drawbacks i could ee is having to inject your horse for 29 days. but she had no unusual swelling or issues. the first couple of days she did acts little crampy, but Vet had advised she be given the shot right before feeding so that seemed to help lessen the crampy effects.
so something to try, especially if you have a mare who doesn’t mind needles. so far I’m happy with the results.
