Cheap(er) outdoor misting fans

I’d love to find a misting fan to use outdoors to cool my old guys down. (Right now I have a homemade shower contraption that they use as a mister – they stand next to the water spray and the mist cools them, but it takes a lot of water).

I’ve searched the forums and I have seen websites people recommend, but some fans are $1000+, way over my budget. I see farmtek has a retrofit kit for about $50 that you can hook up to any fan. Would that work, or be $50 wasted?

Also, this would be along a fenceline (under a big tree). Is a freestanding fan my best option? Or are there fans that mount on the top board of a fence? (I haven’t found one!).

Any other advice?

Thank you!

If you want inexpensive, water saving and easy as pie to use…try these:

yep, right at a Walmart. I bought two of these…they do come in longer sizes too.
Misting hoses…with tons of little misting nozzles attached. Perfect for along fencelines…attach with twist or cable ties to the top rail in a long line. Attach one end to a hose then you can direct each nozzle slightly in and up.
The misting hose will produce a fine strong mist that cools that area very well and helps keep flies away too. Best if used in a shady spot, but works decently without shade too.
And if you get a couple 10’ ones or an 18’one a few horses can stand in a line and gt cooled at once as opposed to one at a time with a fan. No electricity needed…just water.
My horses LOVE theirs and it’s way more effective and a lot cheaper than a fan IMO.

Mistyblue, THANK YOU!!!

I checked out your link, then googled for more choice, and just ordered a misting hose from Amazon for $25.00 (30 foot long). HURRAY!!! I was put off by the agricultural set ups for $2000 . . . . all I wanted was something like this, at a price like this. Yay!

Aweso![](e…you’ll love it. Have had mine for about 3 years now and in hot weather they get a ton of use (I have a 20’ and a 30’) and the horses adore them.
Can’t beat the price…can’t beat the set up either. Took me all of 5 minutes from opening the package to having it up and working. And I’m NOT handy, LOL!
I set mine up along a fence in the paddock, or if it’s a time of day when the sun is directly overhead and I’ve got no shade in the paddock I then set mine up in an outside panel stall. I have one of those easy-up canopy things for the outside stall so it’s shady and misty-cool. Or I just put them in then under fans in the stalls, depends on the day.
Here’s a photo of the outside misting stall…it’s later afternoon so the shade has moved but in early afternoon the stall is all shade. You can see the misting hose attached to the top panel rails:

I don’t recommend them for inside though. I tried one of mine along the barn rafters in the aisle (my aisle doubles as a run in) and it soaked the interior of the barn because the nozzles were pointed down. Rubber matted floors are slippery as heck when they get misted.
The hoses can drop the temps in the shade at least 15-20 degrees, you feel an enormous difference. And there was no way I was spending a couple grand on an ag mister either. You’re going to love these misters!

These guys have a pretty good selection; http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/cat1;ft1_cooling_exhaust_fans;ft1_circulation_fans.html

I was also searching for cheaper misting systems and I found them in mistingsystems.net

Just check out the following misting fans that worth less than 400$
18? Misting Fan (Low Pressure)
24? Oscillating Misting Fan (Low Pressure) - http://mistingsystems.net/products/misting-fans/24-cool-off-misting-fan-low-pressure/

They will produce fine mist and cools the surrounding. Make your horses comfortable with the misting fans. There are also misting fans for less than 100$.

I also use the inexpensive patio misters. They can cool my barn by 10 degrees on a wicked hot day. Hard to write as the temp here right now is 23 degrees F!
Anyway, I have a lot if mineral in my well water, so every so often I do have to climb a ladder, unscrew the misters, and blow out the mineral build-up with my air compressor. But well worth the effort in the heat of summer.

They all look like good ideas, but I’m having trouble thinking about cooling features today. It’s 14 here & snowing
