Cheap Nylon Trail Bridle? Halter Bridles

Looking for some shopping help… low budget, of course!
I am casual trail rider, no overnight or long distance rides.
I have an English Wintec snaffle bridle now, but I’d like the ability to clip the bit in and out of it so that I can trailer in the halter bridle without bit and reins.
Also, perhaps a separate concept, I have this idea that the reins could easily be used as a lead rope… simply unclip the reins from bridle and clip to the D ring, or such, on the halter. This would come in handy on difficult trails where I need to get off and walk and need a nice LONG lead rope.

Any ideas or recommendations?

I had one similar to this one:

While I didn’t have much of a problem with the nylon part of it, All of the cheaper ones made with nylon are also made with that cheap nickel hardware that gets all crusty. The one I bought didn’t come with that awful bit. I ended up replacing it after a year with a nice beta halter bridle with stainless steel hardware. It cost at least 4 - 5 times more BUT it will last 10 times longer.

Bummer about the cheap hardware! I am looking at some nylon halter bridles online and they say “nickel plated hardware”…

Yeah…that stuff oxidizes like crazy and gets a crust on it.

If you have a favorite nylon halter already, you can easily purchase nylon or bio/beta-thane “clips” to attach your bit to the halter rings (up by the horse’s eyes). For reins, use any set you have and buckle them to snaps. The snap can clip onto the bit or the halters lead ring.

horseDOTcom has Weaver Halters with nice hardware for $15. They also carry snaps that you can attach to your reins to make them easy to move from the bit to the halter.
http://www.hought.com/end-bh.html has “bit hangers” in biothane, if you look at endurance sites you may find nylon or other prices, but this seems like an average price.

The problem I had when using a basic halter and clipping the bit to the eye rings is that often the halter’s poll strap would slip down the back of the neck and change where the bit was held - a simple homemade nylon brow band fixed that easily (I recycled a nylon dog leash). (It probably doesn’t bother most horses but it did mine.) But I found that I much preferred an “add on” headstall - it fits over my rope halter and snaps to it so I don’t need a throatlach plus it already has a browband, and the bit doesn’t shift around in my horse’s mouth. (here’s an example - https://www.thedistancedepot.com/Deluxe_Add_on_Headstall_p/bbt-dah.htm)

Hope this provides some ideas!

I have a beta/biothane from The Distance Depot - it’s really nice.

If you’re looking for a cheaper nylon Long Riders carries them: http://www.longridersgear.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=83_146_255&products_id=135

And here are just the bit hangers:

My neighbor sent me this link the other day - really like the look of them but don’t have experience w/them: http://sunsethalters.com/halterbridle.php

I don’t have one of the halter/bridles pictured from sunset halters, but I got a pair of their flat rope reins. Love them! They are least 5 years old and still look great. They have clips on them so I can unhook and use as a lead if necessary.

A young lady at the barn recently purchased a Weaver biothane halter/bridle combo and I believe it was $50. The barn manager and I like it. It looked nice. Barn manager and I purchased Taylored Tack biothane halter/bridle combo’s and we both LOVE them. They are fantastic for trail riding. I tacked my horse up yesterday and had the reins clipped under the halter part. His rein is a 9’ closed set so it makes a nice lead line. And it is purple. What could be better than that?

I have the longriders bridle/halter and reins and I like them but I do advise caution when using them. My horse went to scratch his head with his rear leg and put the leg through the rein. He panicked when he found himself stuck and went backwards through a solid fence post. THere is nothing on the bridle or reins that are meant to break. Fortunately one of the clips released and other than a nasty rope burn on his rear pastern (could have been much worse) and a downed fence line all was well. I no longer use the reins just the bridle.

I recently heard of a similar incident but in this instance a person on the ground was badly hurt. So, although I like the synthetics for their ease of cleaning (and I like the look as well) just be aware that they are not made to break and handle a horse using them with this in mind.

I use a tiny brass snap on at least one of the rein ends for just that reason- I want to have something that will fail.

I have 2 Taylored tack bridle/halter combos. I love them. But I think a cheaper option would be nice to occasionally have on hand.

thanks JenLS, this one looks great! Just what I was looking for.
It has the option of brass hardware that won’t rust/corrode and that’s probably the way to go.
Price is not bad and super easy to clean

I found the flat reins with the clips, too.
