Cheap Sunglasses for riding/barn work?

Anyone have any recommendations for finding inexpensive sunglasses that hold up to barn work and riding? I refuse to pay $50 bucks for sunglasses that are going to get dropped and scratched within a month. I also do not believe that the super-fancy, hideously expensive designer sunglasses are any better or longer lasting that the cheap ones. If you disagree, please do enlighten me as to why/how, cuz I just don’t see it (pun intended!).

I usually get the cheap version at Target for about $10 to $20, and replace as needed, but…ugh, I hate shopping for the damn things. I go through a couple of pairs a year, but probably should replace the scratched ones sooner!

So, ideas for either brands or stores that carry decent but inexpensive sunglasses?

I found some great Oakley Jackets (I think they are called jackets) on sale at the Oakley outlet for $40 out the door. They have lasted me a few seasons so far at the barn, cover good for dirt and dust, and have a straight arm so they don’t hurt my ears while riding.

If you go though a few $20 ones a season… then having one pair that will last a while should be a good bet.

I generally buy mine at Wallyworld, or Big Lots, got a few nice ones for 2 bucks a piece, only my kid kills (or looses) them on a consistent basis…

Stick with a pair of relatively cheap but comfortable sunglasses (like Target, etc.) but invest in a simple strap of some sort to keep them around your neck.

Most glasses-keepers are really simple and are a break-away type design so you don’t have to worry about entanglement of any sort. Saves you from dropping and losing them, and prevents many scratches that you’d otherwise get from setting them down all over the place.

And I agree that the expensive sunglasses don’t have anything over the cheapies, as long as you are careful to only choose those that offer UV protection.

As a former cheap sunglasses buyer converted to expensive, I will say you do get what you pay for, and sometimes the subconscious plays factor. For instance, I know I paid X for my glasses, so I’m determined I will take better care of them.

I switched from cheap to Smith wrap around several years ago and loved them. They were snug enough on my head that I rarely had to readjust or worry about them falling off. Unfortunately, due to a very unruly horse experience, I broke my nose a few years ago and have had to switch to a wire frame as the plastic don’t sit the same anymore - at this point, I’ve also switched to prescription, so that is why I’ve spent so much on them. I currently have a pair of Columbia wire frame and the level of difference in workmanship is so much higher. The hinges are stronger, nose pieces better made, and just overall more comfortable. Non-prescription cost for this frame is $60 online.

Otherwise, for the last few years, all my barn and jet-skiing sunglasses come from the Dollar Tree and Dollar General. (yes, I have sunglasses in the bottom of Lake Erie :sigh:)

If you’re planning on wearing them every day, why not invest in a pair that won’t get scratched, cracked, or lose its screws next week? LL Bean has some nice ones for around $50…

Also, TJ Maxx sometimes has ridiculous deals on skiwear and other sporty items; worth checking out.

Dollar store. It’s the only place I buy sunglasses.

I buy 5-10 pair at a time since I am always losing them. They are generally 100% UV…I also buy ‘cheaters’ (or readers) there.

Seconding the polarized fishing glasses at W-mart. I wear them everywhere and the cheapest ones are only like $8 or so. (At least they were here last weekend!)

Think too… if you’re riding outside a lot, or doing work around the farm that is outside, getting a good pair of sunglasses that properly protects your eyes from the rays is important. After all, thats their original intention! Many cheepo ones don’t have that protection :frowning:

Ooh, those are nice! AND cheap!

one tip on sunglass ownership.
don’t sit on them…

My fiance keeps buying me Oakleys and they are fabulous. I told him to never buy me expensive sunglasses because I lose them, break them, etc. But he didn’t listen and I love him for it. He’s bought me around 10 pairs and I’ve had to tell him to stop because they last! He gets a considerable discount on them so while I do feel bad when something eventually happens, I feel like a pair of sunglasses lasting 2 years or more has earned their keep! They survive being dropped on the concrete aisle a few times a month!

The only time I wear cheap sunglasses now is whitewater rafting or wakeboarding.

I like Pugs brand. I generally pick them up at Speedway has stations. Lifetime warranty and about 15-20 a pair. I find they go under my helmet the easiest.
