So, where is everyone’s Go To place? I have a Tractor SUpply place nearby, but they are pretty pricy. Any good alternatives?
I price everything and it varies depending on what you’re looking for and when. So far the cheapest, generally, that I have found for that stuff (most recent purchase was blanket bars, jump cups, and bridle hooks) was State Line Tack. Usually for the small, cheap, but heavy stuff (e.g. hooks, etc) it’s worth it to just go to the TSC, since I frequent there weekly.
But again, sometimes I’ve gotten better deals through SmartPak or Dover.
Local flea market.
SStack does have good prices.
But for the million little things every barn needs like the Op listed, also try looking at Chick’s Saddlery online. I like their prices for all the little stuff, cheaper than anywhere else I’ve found so far.
Also check horseloverz.com for clearance items and watch for their $1 and $5 days. I’ve gotten some crazy deals there.
My local hardware store (not big box) usually beats out TSC for snaps and things, and Southern States can have good prices, it depends.
Of course, keep an eye on eBay, I agree that sstack.com has good prices, and sometimes horse.com does as well.
Do not forget Black Friday discounts soon! Get on everyone’s emailing lists and plan for a bulk order. I agree with Chick’s and Scheiders also Big D’s, Jeffers.
Just a suggestion…don’t buy just on price. You want things to last so you’re not re-buying in a short period of time. That’s more expensive than buying good products up-front.
I’ve been getting stuff from State Line Tack recently. It comes next day even by ground!
But I always check around. Usually I google the item that I am looking for and price shop that way. Then I buy from the place that has the most things on my list.
Auctions. Every couple of months I drive out to Thurmont horse auction and load up and wgat I can for barn stuff. There is a guy there who owns a tack shop ans auctions off stuff cheap if he has too much. I might get 10 cotten leads for $20. And the used tack usually yields a few blankets at $5 each which may give me nothing else but an extra set of leg straps.
For small hardware items, like snaps and such I will look in fabric stores, and True Value, sometimes order from Grainingers when the DH orders for workstuff.
I also shop tackwholesale.com and chicks too.
Blanket bars - dowels and rope. You can buy 100’ of polypropylene rope at Lowes for $10. Drill holes through the dowel ends, pass the rope through, put knots to space and secure the dowels, and you can stack however many you want. You can do the same with chain and eye hooks.
JB, you can also use rope passing through a length of PVC if you want a bar on the front of a stall. The PVC adds stability, then you can just tie the rope around the bars. Even customize your colours. They work really well!
You might also check out Valley Vet - really great prices. Its more Western for other items.

Yep you could! Doing the dowel method, I hang mine on the front of the stall too - looped around the top of the front, and hangs down the outside.
Oh these are GREAT ideas!! I LOVE the PVC Blanket rack idea!
Seconding who said don’t buy just for price… Either buy enough to have extras for replacements or make sure you can buy more later. I hate having everything not match!
