Checkmate

Anyone have foals/yearlings by him. I would love to see pictures Also what kind of mare (Pedigree) (body type/performance etc). What do you think he contributed?? Don’t seem to find much on their website–Thanks

I would be interested in this as well. Checkmate is one of my favourite show jumpers.

I had a super filly by him this year that was Premium GOV. super type, correct and elegant with 3 super gaits and a wonderful trot. She is out of a Drosselklang II/Salieri mare that competed in the young horse jumper classes and then to Mini Prixs. She is what you would consider a bit older style but still feminine and Checkmate added more elegance and modern type. Love the temperament on my filly and have the mare confirmed back in foal to Checkmate for 2015.

Here is a photo album of her.

I have also seen others at inspection and they seem to be very consistent in type, pretty, correct and lovely swinging trots that will be knock outs in the hunter rings.

Super smart

My Checkmate colt is about 18 months right now, although he is at that “spare body parts” stage he is very correct with lots of bone, a great neck and shoulder, super nice big feet, a beautiful walk and a wonderful temperament! One of the smartest yearling I’ve worked with. He is out of a Calimero mare that was looks(never saw her) to be quite decent herself, built uphill, decent conformation, with a text book perfect hunter jump. She threw a nice colt who I believe won some under saddle classes at two and in hand at Devon. My colt is pink papered and was inspected and received a silver premium rating. My knock would be he is kinda straight behind but hard to tell with all his growth stages. He is definitely a hunter mover but built uphill. Love love love him, smart as they come and super friendly

Probably won’t find much info on his babies as I believe this is only his 3rd season standing at stud?
I have a 2014 filly by him, out of a TB mare (MMB GOV). She’s a more refined build, she has Checkmates shoulder which is what i was hoping for, very flat front, nice uphill canter and feminine features. I have yet to find something that she ‘looks’ at. I wanted the baby to have a higher neck set, as the mare, for me was tied in a bit too low, and so far looks good. Hoping he pass along his shorter back but i guess we shall see…There were a few other things that I wanted to change and so far he did a great job. She is super quiet, actually stood quieter than her mom at inspections. She had to go up to every, single, flower/pole and smell it and had to go up to everyone and say “Hi!” She is very confident and has been independent since day 1! First day out of the stall, mom went to the right, baby went to the left, lol! I couldn’t have asked for a better tempered baby. I wanted something fancy that I could take to big shows but also something that was ammy friendly that would be easy to work with. So far I got both!

4-4.5months old (recently weaned so she looks kind of odd)

Dam - not the best picture but you can tell what she looks like, about 1.5 after giving birth

I have more pics and some videos if you are interested

I have a yearling that is out of a Cob/TB event horse. My filly was 1st at the Royal Winter Fair last year in the CSHA Filly of 2013 class. She is a lot like Checkmate. He very clearly passes on his typey face. She is intelligent and brave and is very expressive when it comes to her opinions, however she is also a people pleaser. Mine is also very independent.

Following. Love Checkmate and have him on my possibles list for my TB mare…

Jennifer

Thanks all for your input. I especially like the constant comments about foals being friendly and quiet. The mare I am thinking of breeding is friendly and brave but has the strongest flight index of any horse I have ever owned or bred, so I wanted a quiet mind for sure. I guess it looks like she will do the baby greens in May and June and then be bred, and hopefully have a wonderful hunter foal.

I saw Checkmate at the 70 day test last year and he was rather unflappable. I went to one of the jumping days and the final three days which included flat work and free jumping (cross country was cancelled last year due to weather). He received very good interior scores which speaks to his temperament. He had recently been body clipped and it was very cold (about 7F one morning, literally) and he was extremely well behaved. Contact Jennifer, she can tell you all about him and she is a fantastic stallion owner to work with. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Update

My Checkmate colt Check This at his first outing, such a good boy and just wanted to share. Although he wasn’t a fan of his picture being taken and he stood camped out otherwise a great experience for all  love Checkmate

My mare in foal to Checkmate and due in May. Would love to see how your horses matured!

Sorry, I never updated. The mare had a cesarean April 1, 2016. Fortunately we saved the mare but after 2 days the colt had to be put down. Too may complications. Trying again this year with a different mare. This will be my 3rd attempt to get a Checkmate foal on the ground. Hopefully 3rd time is a charm.

So sorry to hear that
