Chews/bones for dog that swallows everything whole

Rightly said Lots of individuals have puppysat thier home and that they love them as relations. When they conceive to feed thier pup, they need to create certain to decide a high-quality, simply assimilable, petfood whose main ingredient is AN animal based mostly macromolecule supply. We need to take right decision.

We tried a Himalayan Dog Chew. The dogs loved it. It lasted a long time considering how much they loved it. They were pretty obcessed with it. You would still need to remove it from the dog when it gets too small but there was no worry of it splintering.

Love this thread. Thank you for some of the ideas. My dog is a gulper, the whole idea of anything is to get is swallowed. So hard to find distraction chew toys for a dog with this theory.

These did not work for me at all. I bought one appropriately sized for my dog (dog is 27lbs so I bought a rather large expensive Himalayan Dog Chew), I gave it to my dog. I left the room for literally a couple of minutes and when I came back it was gone. He had broken it into a a few smaller pieces (I assume) and swallowed them whole.

I would like to add that I think a lot of times we see the dog with an unauthorized or potentially hazardous item and make a grab for it, or look like you are going to make a grab for it–direct eye contact, stiffening of upper body to rise–and dog goes to gulp down what it has, whole if possible. Especially true if this has been repeatedly “done” to the dog. It’s a form of resource guarding. The dominant dog can’t steal the thing if the thing is already eaten. I have a great trick of “trading” a handful of cheerios, always kept in a pocket, for the unauthorized item. Start them young with this and they will very happily trade whatever they have for that handful of cheerios, forever. A handful of plain cheerios (no honey-nut or anything, just plain) seems like a jackpot to a food motivated dog, but it’s totally safe for them to snarf down. A lot safer then what you are taking away, especially now that they make non-GMO, organic, gluten free Cheerios.

I’d also add rawhide is incredibly toxic. I’m not sure bully sticks are much better. If it isn’t a potential obstruction risk, it’s a pancreatitis/liver disease/cancer risk. I haven’t a clue what a safe chew for a dog past human grade food products, frozen, which would invariably be messy on a carpeted floor. I used to swear by cow hooves (which soften up a lot with saliva and in the gut) but the last year or so they’ve been sketchy. Too brittle, pieces snap off where they never did before, and may or may not have caused some GI issues in one dog. Tossed those and now I’m pretty much at a loss as to what to let them chew on.

I am about to order some Kangaroo tail for my Dobe that has this problem. Turkey necks are good too.

Not much else out there that he can have.

I get raw femur bones for my guys. They are not hard core chewers though. I do agree about going to take something from the dog. A trade works much better. I also like to just call them over to me. Most of the time they will leave the item behind and I can go pick it up after distracting them with something else.

Where did you order the kangaroo tail from? I also have a destructo Dobe.

I order most from Big Country Raw in Ontario, Canada.

We don’t give our Boxer anything. As a young dog she had a bully stick (dried bull penis). She jumped off the ottoman with the stick sticking straight out. If she’d landed on it, it would have gone straight down her throat or worse.

She plays with Kongs and has one squeaky toy from a dog shop that she’s treated very respectfully. It was a $25.00 one so I think it was better made than some.

It is just safer to keep the bones etc. away from her.

I use Dreambones for my Corgis. Rawhide free and made from chicken and veggies. Don’t last long but make the boys happy they get one every night and spend a happy 10 to 15 minutes chewing on it
