Chia Seeds

COTHers, I’ve been adding chia seeds to my own diet for a few months now and after doing some research into chia seeds for horses and I’m looking into adding it to everyone’s feed. However I’ve got a couple questions for ya. I’ve seen mixed responses on how much to feed-from 2 tbsp to 2 cups! I’ve looked around amazon, where I buy chia for myself from, but y’all this is about to get expensive! Surely there’s a cheaper way to buy it in bulk. For those who do this, how much do you feed and where do you buy it from? Thanks!

There have been lots of threads on chia seeds here and if you do a search you will find a bunch. Some swear by it, but many get essentially the same nutrition for far cheaper from flax (either whole or ground).

I have been feeding my mare chia seeds and I feed a regular supplement scoop! I also get it from Costco! A 3lb bag is around 8 bucks! A few others in my barn also feed it and so far she likes it, her coat is shiny and I am hoping the benefits of coating her gut will help her in some way!

If you are trying to increase the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in your horses diet, flax has a better ratio and is much cheaper.

I don’t have a Costco membership, but I will defam bitty check Sam’s now, thank you! I’m hoping it will be good for my Thoroughbreds who are prone to colic and ulcers, as well as my Appy mare who isn’t on grass. And hey, if my show boys end up with shiny coats and more energy I won’t complain

Scibbler, how much flax do you feed?

Flax does all of this.

I feed my horse 1/4 cup a day primarily as an alternative to psyllium which he won’t eat. I find it at Costco or Walmart in the baking aisle. I also buy from this website.
