Chicken Broke her Wing!

Sunday we noticed two of our hens were missing when we did a head-count during our nightly lock-them-in-the-coop routine. Today I noticed one of the remaining hens was holding her wing not right.

Pretty sure it is broken so did the best we could to splint it against her body. I couldn’t really tell what was what with all the feathers so I don’t know if it is an open fracture or not?

Was hoping for some guidance on what to expect - as in how long does she need to stay splinted - and when will I know I am out of the woods as far as if she is going to make it or not?

I am very sad about this whole thing.

Chickens are incredibly resilient. If you don’t see any evidence of drainage/bodily fluids on the wing, you are probably not looking at something open, I would think. When I had a rooster get run over by my TBs bowling for chickens game and break a wing, I called my vet who told me to look online for videos of how to wrap the wing and just wrap him up for a month or so. Basically, you take vet wrap and you make a figure 8 around the wing and the bird’s body, then you wrap the wing to the body a few times. Leave the other wing free. The bird will be off balanced for a little while, but they figure it out pretty quickly. Re-wrap the wing when it gets wet/dirty. When you re-wrap, you can see how it’s healing (if the bird is able to hold it where the other wing rests, etc). Once my roo seemed to be able to hold the wing on his own, I stopped wrapping him and he was fine and able to use the wing.

www.backyardchickens.com I think this is your best bet, but honestly, broken wing is pretty non-life threatening I would think.

What I posted it what BYC told me to do btw.
