Chicken Stroke?

My oldest hen - sold to me as a 2-3yo 4yrs ago - has started showing some signs of weakness.
Left-sided mainly, wing droops a bit on that side & left leg is her biggest problem…
If she falls on that side & tries getting up she can’t do it,
Once she’s up she’s fine.
She no longer gets on the roosts, sleeps in a nestbox a foot or so off the ground with a ramp up to it.
A couple times I’ve found her in the morning looking like she rolled down that ramp & got stuck at the bottom.
Not upset, but wedged so she can’t get purchase to get up,
Good appetite, still hanging with the 4 younger girls,
Pretty sure her laying days are over, but she’s welcome to stick around.

WTH?

Mareks as a young bird isn’t always fatal and can cause a transient sometimes there and sometimes not neuro problems. Maybe that’s it?

Here are a few other options: http://articles.extension.org/pages/68291/poultry-diseases-affecting-the-nervous-system

And a thread discussing lymphoid leukosis: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/unbalanced-wobbly-weak-neurological-problems-cant-walk.400798/

There are a lot of possibles, unfortunately :frowning:

Thanks
Other birds show no signs/symptoms & they’ve been with me 2yrs.
The lymphoid leukosis sounds likely, but she still has no problem finding food or water.
OTOH, she came from a huge backyard flock that undoubtedly did not vaccinate for Marek’s.
When/if she appears uncomfortable* I will cull her.

*Yes, I realize as prey chickens do not “look sick” until they are pretty far gone :frowning:

Jingles & AO for your hen ~

Could be a tumor pressing on something important as well. I had to put a canary to sleep with similar symptoms due to this issue.

She’s lucky to have you!

My first thought with the drooping wings comment was Mareks. I would just keep her comfortable as you can. Good luck.
