Best kids helmet? My daughter is 4 and is starting lessons. With Helmet Awareness day I’d like to purchase her something. She will be riding at a H/J barn. Should I get her something pink which I know she’d like or go for traditional black? Any specific helmet that seems to fit most kids (I’ll be ordering online )?
I would suggest buying a black helmet. If she has it for a few years, and wants to show, a neutral color is best. She can always have fun with cute shirts, but a helmet is not something I would go that direction with. Different helmets are made to fit different shapes of heads. The safest helmet you can purchase is the one that fits the head correctly.
Oh, totally let her get a pink helmet
At that age I’d just get an inexpensive (but safe) helmet that you’re OK with replacing every year. And a pink plastic one is perfect for learning to ride! I’d get something like this: http://www.doversaddlery.com/aegis%3F-junior-pony-schooling-helmet/p/X1-36261/ that’s dial fit so that you can change it as her head shape changes.
For kids that young it can be tough to find helmets small enough. You will probably have to go try some on and see what will fit her little head. Don’t worry about buying something that will look good in the future, because it won’t fit by then.
Buy whatever fits and whatever she likes.
There is always the helmet cover route too if you find something that fits in a more conservative color but she wants pink or some other fun color.
This may be out of your price range for a starter helmet, but as adult with a tiny head, I was quite impressed with the GPA Jimpi helmet when I tried it on in a tack store a year or so ago. Seemed like a comfortable, solid helmet and also appeared to come in sizes MUCH tinier than I needed so it may go small enough for your needs. I’m not normally much of a GPA fan, but the Jimpi is one that sticks out in my mind as being exceptionally small.
Troxel has a wide variety of styles at different price points, but I’m not sure how small their helmets go. If you can’t purchase from a local tack store (so you would definitely be able to try on before purchase), I would recommend trying to buy online from a store that had free/reasonable return shipping as it might take a couple of tries to get it right.
There’s one I really like and I always found it at Dover, and for some reason I’m not seeing it right now. We have some of the older Aegis helmets and they never sit level on the kids’ heads; hopefully the dial fit will help. Looks like Aegis and DevonAire sell similar, if not identical, models for tiny kids. And do plan to replace it every year or so. Little kids are going to drop them, bang them around, swing them by the strap, and all the things little kids do - and she’ll grow. My bottom line has always been that if they’re so small that you can’t find a helmet that fits propertly, then they’re too small to ride.
Love the dial fit helmets, wish they had been around when I was teaching lots of little 'uns. Have a couple of Aegises in the tack room, and have been able to adjust them for tiny guests to ride our pony.
