Can anyone recommend a decent bit warmer? My hands get so cold that they are not much help!
I use my armpit. . .just shove the bridle in my jacket when I get to the barn, and by the time I get to putting the bridle on problem solved.
We use a cheap blow dryer. Warms your hands at the same time!
If you have access to electric, you can use a plug in heating pad. If there is no power at the barn, you can microwave and roll-up a heating pad at home.
For years, I’ve sewed microwavable bit warmers that velcro around the bit as a fundraiser for our barn. They’ve been very popular.
Warm water. If none in barn, thermos bottle. Only takes a few seconds.
I use my armpit too. Or if you have a heated bucket somewhere in the barn, dipping it in that water will do the trick.
Hot water in a thermos
Tack room is slightly heated, so I figure that does the job.
I use plastic bits in the winter, they don’t feel nearly as cold when it is 20 or colder!
Un zip your coat, put your bridle over your head and zip your coat up with the bit inside while you are grooming. Simple and effective!
I usually use fleece breeches to keep my chilly bits warm
The under-the-jacket method is the best one I’ve come by. You could also buy some Hot Hands, activate one or two, and then vetwrap them around the bit when you first get to the barn or when you start tacking up. Then you can pop them in your boots before riding
I made my own bit warmer, a wet washrag in a big zip-lock freezer bag. I put the wet washrag in the microwave for a minute or more (depending how cold it is), put the heated washrag in the plastic bag, wrap it around the bit and use anything I can find (my husband’s old socks work well) to tie around it and keep some of the heat in.
It works, the horses are happy with their warm bits when it is cold outside!
Do you have a microwave? You can make one of those rice bag hot packs that you heat in microwave and place around bit
Oh dear, I thought this was going to be about heated undies for guys
I use a blow dryer too! I plug it in next to wear I groom, takes 15 seconds to warm the bit (and my hands!) and then I blow dry pony after my ride if she got sweaty.
Horse lives at home, so I microwave rice in an old sock for 1.5 minutes before heading for the barn. Put it on the bit, and, by the time I am tacked, the bit is warm.
Our tack room is heated at home to about 50, so that’s good there. When I travel out I put the bridle and girth on the front floor of the truck and use the heater to warm them up.
Our tackroom is slightly heated and I don’t warm the bit. So far, no issues with bitting my pony - she still grabs it eagerly - so I think I’m good.
I bought several of HotSnapz hand warmers, which are reusable by boiling: https://hotsnapz.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=b721571c1bda8e5528168e18a05b7c01&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=H&Product_Code=PW-241-6&Category_Code=Promos-241
I activate one and wrap it around the bit before I get my horse out, and by the time I’m ready for the bridle the bit is warm.
In the winter, I like riding in a hackamore so I don’t have to fuss with warming a bit.
When I do use a bit, I do try to warm it up a bit if I can (no electric and no hot water for me, so I usually just use my hands) but I honestly don’t get too worried about it. I don’t know how many times I have voluntarily seen my horses put cold metal into their own mouths (licking, chewing, biting metal corral panels for example). So I figure if they do it to themselves… what’s the difference to a cold bit?
