Chopping hay diy? Favorite shredder?

I’m starting to think my 26 yr old Dutch WB has come to the point of needing his hay chopped. He has always had teeth issues, due to a parrot mouth but recently I’ve noticed he is just pulling hay out and not really eating it. We grow our own quality hay, so the idea of buying chopped hay seems a bit hard to swallow. I’ve heard people chop their own and I thought it was with a leaf shredder/mulcher. I would love to know people’s favorite brand. I don’t want to a ton of money on it if he ends up not liking the chopped hay, as I don’t really have a need for a shredder beyond chopping hay. Thanks.

I used one of these, you attach a bag for the mulched stuff.

Could you rent a mulcher from a local equipment rental place to see if it works for your gelding? I completely understand not wanting to purchase it if you’re not sure it’s the solution

I found a used gas powered chipper/mulcher. I was able to chop 30 lbs of hay (sent it through twice) in 45 mins. The chopped hay filled 5 feed bags I had saved. Finding a way to collect it from the equipment was the hardest part of the project. I finally found that using a shade cloth attached to the exit chute was the way to go. It is a really dusty job. If you have to do it inside, I strongly urge wearing a mask.
