She had a filly that became a brood mare, and I believe 2 colts racing… although I think one was injured in a stall accident. Tough and beautiful mare.
I have thought about this myself and agree with many of the points here.
The thing that boggles my mind about some of his diehard fans (not all) is their failure to see reality and the mean-spiritedness they show on social media.
I do think it comes from the “blue collar” story, because a lot of these fans seem to think CC was, and is, at a disadvantage. Maybe they identify with him as the underdog…who knows? All I know is it can be downright crazy. Honestly, I am not sure if some of them even like horses besides CC.

Yeah, I don’t get it. The amount of electrons dedicated to this horse on this board is beyond me.
Shared Belief was 10 times the horse he was, and barely got a whimper.
Hell, when Frankel was in his pomp he didn’t get a 10th of the interest this horse gets, and he was imperious, one of the best we may ever see in our lifetimes.
I don’t get it. It’s almost like it’s not the racehorse that people are interested in.
Excellent post. I still miss Shared Belief.
I’m just amazed at how many people feel the need to write negative posts about the horse. He had a good story (long shot that was bred for peanuts nearly wins the Triple Crown) and was, I thought, a pretty darned good race horse.
Exactly what brings out the sniping, I really don’t know. As for the person who suggested that owning horses makes a difference, please explain. I have a barn full of hay burners and that has had no impact on my opinion of CC.

The question is: why didn’t American Pharoah get a frothing fanbase? He’s a plain brown wrapper with wealthy owners and a talented trainer who gets lots of talented horses? Not as exciting for the casual fan, I guess.
I agree, but I’m glad! That way, those of us who adore and appreciate him don’t have to wade through all the ridiculous comments when an article is posted about him on social media.

It’s probably because the sniping is made by people who don’t have horses, don’t know anything about the industry (don’t want to learn anything about the industry) and ban people who try to educate them, while remaining fixated on this one single horse, however stunning he might be.
And throw in the drama of “True Mom” and “True Dad” whom the rabid fanatics insist handraised this horse by themselves and made him everything he is today on their pittance of a 30% interest, and well, there you go.
Let’s just admit it. A lot had to do with the unending soap opera that began when he went to Dubai, continued through the sojourn in England, and ended (well, not really) when Taylor Made purchased the 30% share. Actually, the soap opera continues to this day, just not as prominently.
The image that will remain with me until my dying day is the metal box that he flew in as “cargo.”
What I’m evidently missing is the attention CC is getting. I never see or hear anything about him except here on COTH, and frankly I don’t get why people keep posting about him here. He’s a fine horse, I just don’t get all the COTH posting about him.

I’m not sure if you can say he’s “kind” though. He’s got a pretty good reputation as a biter. He’s not mean-spirited in a I-KEEL-YOU Calimonco attitude, but he’s not that sort of lovey dovey go-lie-down-in-the-stall kind of guy that American Pharoah is. That’s not to say he’d take a chunk outta ya each time, but one just has to be alert to his moods.
They probably had him Aced up the wazoo on the Fan Days. Which is no shame to it, I remember in the last days of Zenyatta’s time at Hollywood Park, when she was getting so many visitors, I think they were making sure she was on Happy stuff. The final day visitors were allowed, there were a good 100+ folks to see her, they even took her back to her stall for a few during the round of pictures and probably gave her more Ace before they brought her back out.
Was Zenyatta a feisty one too? I was always under the impression that she was pretty nice.

She was pretty feisty on the track, one of my favorite stories was of Steve Willard telling us about the first time he got to ride her, and why (she’d bucked everyone else off). On the ground, she definitely had a boss mare attitude. I always got the impression that she was aloof, watchful (those pictures of her on the patch of grazing behind Barn 55 at HP where she’s always standing, head up, ears forward) and she was more tolerant towards people than in-your-pocket kind. She was very contained within herself, knew how great she was. Every picture I have with her, she’s not looking at me, or the camera. She’s very lofty.
I think the reason they had her Aced up that last day was because of the crowd. 100+ people is a lot of people, and the Barn 55 team was doing their best to accommodate everyone to get pictures with her.
Like the energizer battery, the beat goes on for Chrome. Early odds favor CC for the 2016 BC Classic.

Nah it all started when Steve gave his sore loser and everyone else is a cheater speech. His words of unfairness reached all of those who don’t understand the game and to them it was gospel. I don’t think it would of escalated to what it is now if he never ran his mouth.
So, one of the owners was a twit. That doesn’t explain all the trash talk about the horse
That certainly was the nail in the coffin for me. Lost a lot of interest in the horse after that. shrug He’s a nice enough horse; did super the first half of his 3yo year. Didn’t do much after that to warrant all the hysterical fans, IMO. I’m not “trashing” the horse; I just think he has more to prove.
Maybe he’ll have a knock out year. His DWC prep was fine, but he trounced a bunch of mediocre handicappers. Frosted at least beat some decent enough horses in his prep. The most impressive thing about Chrome’s race was the weight he had to carry.
Anyway, despite all that, he looks good. I’m interested to see how he does in the Dubai World Cup against some real competition.

Where do you think a lot of those people got their opinions of racing and C.C.'s unjust from? If the Coburn’s kept their mouths shut, it probably wouldn’t escalated to that level of insanity.
Look what happened with Zenyatta. The Mosses would talk about her in cutesy ways making her sound human and people went nuts.
It seems like in today’s age horsemen just need to stick to the facts and have simple speeches. The media needs to quit photographing and reporting everytime a horse eats, bathes, yawns, and sh*ts. Yes it’s bringing in more attention but it’s also bringing in craziness that’s not really supporting the industry.
So there’s been some interesting developments in Chrome-land.
Looks like the partnership is finally officially dissolved. Hope’s Love is listed on Equibase as being owned 100% by Perry Martin. The Coburns have changed their FB page to Silver State Racing, and it looks like they got California Chromet (who will be renamed to R Sunday Surprise as she has not raced yet … which honestly doesn’t sound any better). No idea what’s going to become of Faversham or Love The Chase.
Coburn and Martin were an odd couple from the get go. Steve was bad PR and Perry was no PR.
UK broadcaster, Nick Luck, says expectations for Chrome too much and unfair. Interesting since the brits never got to see CC race.

Sounds like the Coburns got the 2014 filly, and the Martins have Hope’s Love and Faversham as well as Love The Chase.

That’s the one that they really wanted and they had already informally named. I think they were rather put out with the new name Martin gave her. I imagine they also got a fairly hefty chunk of cash in addition, what with LTC being in Kentucky bred to a top stallion. Martin was very nice on his page explaining this. So hopefully everybody’s happy at this stage.
