Frank Mitchell projects good things at stud. Is Frank going out on a limb?
I love him and hope he does great. Hopefully whatever freak genetic combination he inherited will be passed on.
I have always been a CC fan, and have been so pleased to see him race so long and so well. I sure hope he wins the Pegasus by a romping 5.
That said, my guess is he follows Spectacular Bid’s life path. A runner for the history books…and a sire with a few hits that eventually putters out.
But who knows, maybe he will surprise us again in his next career.
The fact that he’s been such a campaigner for so long, without catastrophic injury, IMO, is a vote in his favor. I hope he’s matched with mares who are also sound, and pass that strength on.
I’ve always been of the opinion that the JC should have some sort of breeder’s benefit for horses that retire to stud sound. (Yes, he’s had an owie or two, but the JC needs to at least try to prevent things like Barbaro/Ruffian. It’s bad for the game. Sound foals come from sound parents.)
Time will tell! I agree with kelo’s projection, but I’d love to be wrong. I do hope he passes his soundness on.
He’s certainly going to have the best possible chance for success. Taylor Made has previously listed some bloodlines to cross with that (on paper, at least) look to be promising. With a relatively “lowish” stud fee, I think he will have a first class booking for at least the first couple of years. Like every other young stallion, only time will tell.
I hope that he proves the doubters wrong, BTW.
He’ll definitely get mare support to help him out and having his sireline (outside of Lucky Pulpit) doesn’t hurt but I’m not sure he’ll live up to the hopes. It’d be cool if both Chrome and Pharoah set the world on fire as sires but their female families aren’t super strong at the moment.
I wish him well at stud. I hope he produces some good runners. It would be nice to see his positive story continue after his racing days are over. I agree that the stud fee they set for his first year is a sensible one. I hope he gets some nice mares.
He’ll get a few good mares that his owner bought for the purpose and some of Taylor Made’s but I doubt he’ll be the choice for most people with really high class mares. There aren’t many folks who will breed their best mares to a first year stallion with a less than exceptional pedigree. Maybe some good mares but not the best ones.
It’ll be interesting to see what he gets though. If he does well (and makes attractive babies) with the mare he has to start with, then his book should get better.
I hope he does well. Such a game horse.
