Chromium

My vet just suggested putting my 12-year-old WB hunter on chromium as his insulin came back slightly elevated (24.5).

Anyone here have success stories to share?

He’s already on low NSC grain, first cut hay and restricted access to grass. Gets super spooky if fed the wrong stuff, and flat-out paranoid on MSM.

I give my pony chromium picolinate (as this is the form we happen to have) as he is IR, cresty and was overweight. I did so many diet changes (soaked hay, handful of low NSC grain to just get his supplements in, no grass at all etc) so I can’t say for sure the chromium helped, but he is doing much better, has lost weight and his crest is now soft (was rock hard). Its an easy add and does not cost much so I’ve kept it up for him.

Thank you! How much are you feeding? Internet research is coming back with a big range (as usual).

I give my guy 4mg/day. I read somewhere that giving more than 4mg/day is not beneficial but I’m sure it also depends on the form of chromium that is given, as there are several different kinds. I see on the package of Quiessence (chromium/magnesium supp) that 4mg of chromium is the max to give a horse per day (though the chromium is a different form that the picolinate that I give).

Chromium propionate, not picolinate, has shown to help insulin sensitivity at 4mg/day. Picolinate has not shown to have that effect
