Just looked through the Horse Show issue of the Chronicle. I am wondering what the Channel 1 and Channel 2 results refer to in zone standings. I tried to puzzle it out but have no idea.
And congratulations to any COTHers who won something!!
I’m not even going to try to paraphrase because I’m still trying to understand it myself
Cutting and pasting this
"*USEF Horse of the Year (HOTY)
All USEF-licensed hunter and jumper competitions are now classified as either Channel I or Channel II, and USEF will offer National HOTY awards in each channel and USHJA will offer Zone HOTY awards in each channel.
* Channel I includes Premier- and National-rated hunter competitions and standalone jumper level 4-6 competitions. If a Premier- or National-rated competition also offers jumper classes, then Jumper levels 1-6 will be considered Channel I.
* Channel II includes Regional-rated hunter competitions and jumper level 1-3 competitions. Jumper levels 4-6 will not be allowed to run at a Regional-rated competition offering jumper classes.
* It is important to note that points earned in each channel are exclusive to that channel."
Also, congrats on getting your issue! Mine have been arriving super late (flushing guiltily from tantrum’ing to customer service over a missing issue a few back that turned out to be just… very, very … very late – thanks for the extra copy, though!). And congrats, too, to those of you who won something!
ETA: this link preview doesn’t go to the URL I’ve been trying to paste so, apologies for that.
I had them stop trying to deliver to me twice over the last few years bc one issue was “undeliverable.” Didn’t contact me. Just stopped sending it. And contacting them isn’t easy.
I did eventually get through but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t ringing Middleburg anymore. I was told to “keep riding those beautiful horsies and have a blessed new year.”
But so help me. If I don’t get the Horse Show issue … I may never get over the changes but it’s still my favorite sign of spring. I will cry. At bare minimum.
Basically Channel I is what used to be A/AA shows, and Channel II is what used to be B/C shows. Rather than the points being weighted like they used to be, they’re now tracked entirely separately, with their own HOTY awards.
Interesting. Thank you!
Are shows noting on prize lists which tier they are? Can someone earn points in both tiers? Let’s say a pony rider does some of the Triangle A shows (in NC) but also does a
couple of big shows at Tryon with $100,000 GP’s….wouldn’t their points be from both tiers?
Do they give awards based on the tier with the most points?
Thanks all!
My undestanding is that it is “inclusive” because now the people who could not “afford” (time or money) to attend a lot of Channel I / A,AA shows have a chance to get a HOTY ribbon.
All A/AA shows are Channel 1. We don’t really have many Channel 2 shows in this area. Aiken used to have some (Zone 4 but being a contiguous state the points count in Zone 3) and so did Tryon. But, now that USEF is granting overlapping licenses based on mileage I think all of those shows are Channel 1 now too.
As others have said, and A show is an A show–it’s going to be channel 1 points.
As far as I know, you can earn points in both categories, depending on what shows I go to. I’m not sure we have that many B/Cs left in Zone 3. Is there anything other than Warrenton left?
So there are two sets of HOTY awards, if you go on the Zone points for USHJA you select whether you want to see Channel 1 or Channel 2 points.
I was just wondering this yesterday; thanks for the clarification
z3 channel 2 includes WIHS regional and Piedmont (weird, I know), as well as some Swan Lakes due to the contiguous zone rules.
Ah, I always forget WIHS Local is a B! It doesn’t feel like one.
