Heh out there. Lets share some good financial/breeding cost info. How much does your vet or vet clinic charge for chute fee. Mention if it is including or not including standard drugs and post breeding exam and flush or oxytocin as needed. So, fees for normal frozen semen breeding?
My vet charges $690.00 but I think it includes board so I will ask them Monday and report. We are in Southern Oregon.
not familiar with the term. Is a “chute fee” an all inclusive fee for a breeding cycle? If so my vets here don’t work that way…there is an individual fee for each service provided
I think you are talking about a breeding package fee; I mostly hear of chute fees in relation to stallions, especially QH stallions. But if you are asking about frozen semen fees then our practice charges a flat fee of $400, plus a daily boarding fee. That $400 includes prostaglandins, all ultrasounds for that cycle, an ovulatory drug, the actual insemination and follow-up oxytocin. We do ultrasound around the clock, at least every 6 hours.
It does not include a culture/cytology, biopsy, lavages or progesterone. The mare care is $13/day for a mare and $16/day for a mare and foal.
Gayle in Oregon: The Southern Oregon vet clinic that I think you are referring to has a new fee schedule that I recently confirmed. The info on the website was outdated, and I called to verify. I can send you the pdf of the new contract they sent me if you are interested.
Here are the “chute” fees for this clinic for frozen semen. They have another price structure for fresh cooled. By chute fee, they do mean an all inclusive fee for one breeding cycle. That means palpations, medications (deslorelin, hcg, oxytocin etc), scans, insemination and the follow up preg check.
First off, there is a $58 fee for transferring frozen semen into their tanks.
Then, for the two-dose timed protocol (5 PM and 8AM inseminations) the fee is $578.
If there is only one dose, and therefore the need for more scans, the fee is $817.
Board is in addition, and is $28/day.
I am curious how other clinics charge also. Thanks for starting the thread Gayle. May I make a suggestion to get more input on this thread : Maybe change the thread title to something other than “Chute fees” since that term does not seem to be widely used. Perhaps " DVM Frozen semen breeding fees/package rates" or ?? I think sharing this info will be helpful.
Gosh Hillside - great rates. In Canada our charges are about twice that. I don’t know of any package rates, but my visits to the repro vet for frozen insemination fall in the $800 to $1100 range depending on time there. That includes all drugs and board of $35/day for single mare and $39 for mare with foal at foot.
My people do a great job … but it adds up fast!
And of course there are usually 3 other visits from the home vet: one to pinpoint the cycle, one at 15-16 days along, and a 3rd at 23-30 days, if pregtnant. Charges for that = $70 call fee plus $60 ultrasound. (maybe higher this year)
Same thing in Quebec than what Kathleen wrote. Last bill was 1300$ of breeding fees (ok, this amount includes taxes) + around 18 to 20$ a day (taxes included) for board, depending if the mare comes with a foal or not. Living at 4hrs from the vet’s clinic, I leave the mare there until at least the 1st preg check, so I always plan around 1600$ to 2000$ per cycle for frozen semen. When it don’t work on the first try, it adds up fast.

Ditto Kathleen, but my home vet’s u/s are less as is her call fee. I just paid $1100 for a breeding cycle at the vet that does frozen and with no breeding (mare grew a 60 mm anovulatory follicle and I brought her home after 5 days). Next cycle she worked like clockwork and was only their for 3 days.
I wish vets in this area did frozen package fees, but most charge by procedure.
We do the flat, per cycle fee, as well. $375 a breeding cycle for frozen semen which includes scanning the mare every six hours, oxytocin, prostaglandin, ovulation promoter, cytology, insemination and preg checking. No fee for storing or transferring frozen semen that is being used on client mares. Lavage, treating infections, cultures, biopsies, etc., are in addition. Board is $12.50/day dry mare; $15.00/day for a mare with a foal.

LOL I was thinking the same! But I love my vet, so far, her success rate with my mares worth the bills.
Well, we (and Kathy, I think) are in a competitive part of the country! There is no way we (not speaking for Kathy here) could charge $60+ for an ultrasound, even if we wanted to. We are at $40/ultrasound and that is about what the market will bear here. Within a 2 hour radius there are at least 4 practices I can can think of that are very, very proficient at breeding, including frozen semen.
Breeding fees really, really vary based upon geographic location, and it often has no correlation with quality of work.
This (especially in bold). I live in SE PA and there are a ton of vet practices within 2 hours that could do frozen proficiently, but it just is an expensive area of the country. I know, that’s why I send my young horses out to OH for training, as the cost of it is much less out there.

We have many clients that do. But, we also limit the number of mares we take in ;). I LIKE being able to stand in the office and say who I need to check that a.m. by NAME, not by a number. It helps me stay in touch with what we are doing and to recognize that we are dealing with animals and not machines. But also, Hillside is also correct - we live in a part of the country where are costs are lower (not including last year…hay and feed costs were over the top for us last year) so part of that is reflected in our services costs, as well as the cost of the horses we breed, raise and sell. And yeah, Sunnydays…we do have a few successes :D…as does Hillside ;). Y’all should move to our part of the country. Of course, you’ll have to sweat a lil’ bit to live here and learn to noodle! Yeah…definitely have to learn to noodle!
