Cicero and Conquistador

Anyone know anything about them? I’ve scoured the internet without much luck.

If I am thinking of the same Cicero, I believe he stood in Washington state. I knew a couple of his offspring. They were beautiful and athletic. Also, quite quirky temperament wise. I believe Conquistador stood somewhere in Oregon. I never met him, but I remember receiving his stallion video and thinking that him and his offspring looked quite nice. I believe that he was quite successful in dressage.

Libby Anderson’s Holsteiner stallion Conquistador?

FoxFire Farms had Cicero. Karen Reid. I’m sure she has tons of information if you email her. She’s very nice.

We had two Cicero’s in our barn at one point - quirky temperament is an understatement - they did not stay long.

I know that the mare is half but it was two from two different mares… so it does make one wonder.

I am sure there are nice ones out there.

I also know 2 Cicero’s, both quirky temperament. One is performing well but needs to be ridden 8 days a week. The other one ended up being given as a pasture ornament because the owner couldn’t manage him.

I was trying to be tactful about Cicero offspring, but since someone else said it first . . . yes, the 2 that I knew were pretty crazy. One of them for sure was given up on as a riding horse. I can’t remember what came of the other one.

Thanks guys, I’m guessing Conquistador was in the northwest. Keep the stories coming, they’re super interesting! Anyone have specific examples of their craziness?

Im pretty sure you’re thinking of Gail Hildreth’s stallion Conquistador. She has Sunset Ridge Farm in Klamath Falls, OR. I believe she has retired from the horse business. I’ve started a number of his foals for folks over the years and they were all good minded athletic horses. There are alot of his offspring in my area. The person to talk to about him would be Shauntel Bryant, Jeremy Steinberg’s partner. You can reach her through their website. I believe she rode/competed a number of Gail’s horses in the past. Hope that helps you out some!

This would make a lot more sense!

The one that is performing well has to be ridden a lot unless he starts bucking and running with his head down to his knees. he is well manered on the ground but can have his moments under saddle.

The other that was given as a pasture ornament was dangerous to handle. Always rearing and bucking. Under saddle he was a nightmare. Running away and trying to put his rider off.

PM if you want details - I dont want to slam someones stallion on a public BB beyond saying that they seem to have difficult temperaments…

I have two Conquistador mares

Conquistador, HOL, (Constitution X Rachel X Landgraf) and owned by Gail Hildreth-Whitsett. He’s been dead for quite some time, but Gail had a lot of frozen semen and her husband, a successful veterinarian bred a lot of quality TB mares to him. Many of the dressage offspring were started by Debbie Evans or her daughter Lisa Arney (both outside Eugene) and those offspring directed toward the disciplines of eventing or jumping were started by Cindy Anderson (currently training at Phyliss Dawson’s farm in VA).

Both of my mares are lovely horses, big, comfortable, correct gaits; smart, high rideability. One is out of a TB mare by Cannonade (head mare on the farm), the other is out of a Swedish mare by Zorn (sensitive and brave). The former is expecting her first foal by Wild Dance in 2012, and the latter has had two foals (Rapture R in 2008, Rosall in 2010). Neither mare is crazy, so I can’t help you there.

I also own a 1/2 sister to Conquistador (by Constitution, owned Karen Reid) out of a TB (Harbeger) X HAN (Marchenoff). Again, smart, star award mare with ISR/Old NA for quality of foals.

You can see the mares/foals on my website <http://www.mares-nest-farm.com>

We currently own a 7yr old Cicero/Sylvester Girl gelding whom we purchased last year. An amazing, athletic, gorgeous, talented horse with more than enough scope for the G.P. ring. He will be headed into competition later this year. He was started late, had some time off, so we are bringing him back slow.
Some would say he is quirky. But define that. He has personality and what it takes it make it to the higher levels.

Some say these horses are a pro ride.

I think it’s unfair to criticize offspring of any stallion when you do not know how the horse was handled, started or the mare they used to produce the foal. The same mare/stallion combination can produce two completely different personality types in the offspring. Seen that happen with a breeder friend of mine.
I have seen a lot of big name stallion offspring that were questionable.

We have a breeder here in BC who uses Cicero as one of his stallions for his mares. (Most of his mares are imported.) He has produced some pretty talented and ride-able horses out here.
He now has a promising young stallion out of Cicero.

Not all Cicero offspring are crazy, we have a gentle giant for one.

I do too but he’s been raised very well!
