Cinch Options

I am worried that my current cinch (a regular mohair string cinch) is causing pressure points at the cinch ring. My mare is quite round and I need to do the cinch up snugly.

I liked mohair because it is not slippery, but I think I need something with padding under the cinch rings. She also has a very narrow girth groove.

Ideas?

Shoulder Relief Cinch!
look them up, they’re lovely and the liner easily detaches to clean and you can buy neoprene, fleece or wool liners!

I use the Professional’s Choice Ventech straight cinch. Brand isn’t ultimately too important, just ensure the felt, neoprene, or fleece liner pads past the rings.

You can buy buckle covers for the cinch. They come in various materials, sheepskin, neoprene, etc. May or may not solve your problem. I might end up trying a shoulder relief cinch myself though. I also have a round mare with a forward girth groove, and she sometimes gets tiny rubs near her elbow.

Heck, I just use leg quilts, the cheap thin ones, doubled under the cinch ring. Easy to use and can be washed in a jiffy.

Yes, you can buy “protectors” to put over the D’s on the cinch, if you prefer to say with your mohair. I have used these from Cashel and they work pretty good.

On Red, I use the Professional’s Choice VenTech cinch. On Shotgun, I use the Professionals Choice Shearling Comfort Cinch.

I suppose some of the reason I don’t use a “regular” mohair cinch is that I don’t like the D’s of the cinch making contact on my horse. I like something protecting it., IMO.

Do you know off hand how wide the cinch is? That is my worry with the TFS cinch…it might be too wide. She really isn’t very conveniently put together.

The core (which is less flexible) is 3 inches wide, the width of the webbing. The depth of the wool fleece on each side of the core (which is very soft and flexible) makes the total width 6 inches.
My own personal preference is for the real wool, but they also make a synthetic fleece model that I believe is available in brown and black as well as “natural”.
