cjeapest adequan/legend online..?

Cheapest adequan/legend online… any ideas where to look. The best I could find was the 10 dose for $399

California Pet Pharmacy has Adequan for $275.99. That is for the 7 dose pack (which is the standard). I’ve ordered from them before and it was a very smooth process.

Does this include syringes?

Probably not, but can’t remember. You’ll need to inquire.

How about trying Pentosan? $110-$120 for 5 shots (we give 1 shot a week for 5 weeks). Currently working with a lameness specialist for SI disease and hocks. We did a round of 5 weeks May/June and just finished another round last week. Our vet recommends doing this 2 - 4 times a year depending upon horse. I’ve done Adequan before and it isn’t cheap and was a lot more shots.

is it just as effective? what does your specialist think?

In short, yes, it can be just as effective. I asked my vet if we should use Adequan or Legend and he specifically suggested the pentosan. He believes the benefits last longer. Pentosan functions as an anti-inflammatory agent, as well as an anti-clotting. It helps with blood flow to the joint and stimulates cartilage regrowth. It is also legal to use while showing and my trainer can give the shots (I hate needles). The link below provides a detailed description of how it works:
https://racehorsemeds.com/product/pentosan-injection/

The first round of pentosan I purchased through Wedgewood. The 2nd round I got directly from my vet. Roughly $120 with syringes and needles. It is worth talking to your vet about. It does require a Rx.

The other thing that my horse has received is OSPHOS. We did two rounds 6 months apart. It helps slow bone degradation and reduce bone/joint inflammation. Not sure what your horse is going through, but just wanted to share treatment. It is hard to find a true lameness expert, and feel lucky that Dr. Martin Gardner is an hour drive away! Good luck with your horse. Hopefully, this is just a maintenance issue for you and not recurring lameness.

You can also buy it from the link above without an RX. Some vets have a huge up-charge on the product, so it can be cheaper to buy from RaceHorseMeds or have an online pharmacy such a a Wedgewood compound it for you (Wedgewood requires an RX). Just FYI.

so you got yours through Wedgewood and not racehorsemeds?

Yes, the first round I got through Wedgewood. Cheaper than Racehorsemeds. Second round I got directly from my vet. Roughly the same price. Racehorsemeds is about $20 more but according to someone above, you don’t need Rx.

It is given IV? I’m not comfortable giving IV meds to my squirmy horse and I’m a nurse!

Wait is Pentosan given through IV?

Is the pentosan given given only through IV? Did you give it? Or your vet ?

I give it IV now but used to give it IM . I stopped doing it IM because it was causing a thinning and darkening of the hair at the injection site that lasted several months.

So you do the IV yourself? Not a vet? Easy or hard to do?

We give IM so it is easy to do. My horse is a dark bay and I haven’t noticed any change in his hair. For the 5 weeks we give injections, we alternate the side of neck the shot is given. We have done two rounds so far this year. The OSPHOS was given by the vet and that was given by IV.

As noted above, we give injections IM. One shot a week for 5 weeks. We have done two rounds of shots about 2 months apart. We might do another round towards the end of the year depending upon how my guy feels.

You would need to be trained in how to give IV injections. I work in healthcare and was also a vet tech for many years. It is easy for me, but I have had lots of practice and my horse is well behaved. Your best bet is giving it IM. If you are worried about hair loss you can give it in the chest so it’s not as obvious. I have also heard that if you inject it too superficially it can cause adverse reactions in some horses, so make sure you are actually getting it into the muscle and not just below the skin. I’m sure your vet would be willing to give you tips and supervise your first attempt.

Not to hijack, but I also use Pentosan for my horse. Our vet has us give it once weekly for 4 weeks and then once monthly for maintenance. Has anyone else used the same regimen? It seems to be effective thus far.

What dose were you giving? Just read an article that suggested 6mg/kg vs the label which says 3mg/kg. Did not realize it could be given IM. Hum. May consider this.
