Clean saddles with Murphy's Oil Soap?

I have a couple of saddles that I want to sell, but can’t find my leather cleaner. Does anyone know whether it would be safe to use Murphy’s?

I seem to remember that it was okay to do, but the bottle doesn’t say so.

Thanks.

better have been as that is what we used to use for all the tack when I worked for a saddlehorse farm … But that was forty years ago so there maybe a better option these days

I’ve used it in a pinch. But to me the smell is awful so I try to avoid it.

yeah you can use it. It’s like using a bar of glycerin soap. Down side, it can leave a tad of a sticky feel.

Thank you! I’ll get right to work. :tickled_pink:

I restore and buy/sell tack an use Murphy’s almost exclusively for cleaning/polishing tack. It does a great job, conditions the leather, as leaves a beautiful tacky gloss. I haven’t found anything specifically made for leather that I like better. I like Leather Therapy products too bit at like 20x the cost of Murphy’s I’ll just stay with The Murphy’s.

Murphys was all I grew up using. The smell will always bring back years of memories for me.

I still use it for routine cleaning.
Wish they still had the gel version.
Another COTHer provided a recipe:
1 quart Murphy’s liquid
Add 2 packs powdered gelatin
(Haven’t tested it yet)

I’ll have to try this - thanks for posting!

I pour the Murphys oil soap in a container wide enough to fit my tack sponge into and leave the lid off for 24 or so hours and it dehydrates down nicely. I would imagine it’s pretty close to the gel version.

:encouragement:Oooh! Kewl tip, jawa!

I am doing that as we e-speak…

Wonderful stuff. When I smell Murphy’s I go straight back to riding as a kid and cleaning tack- every day- with the gel.

And when I smell lemon gum eucalyptus trees which are common around her, that also transports me back to those great days of riding as a kid.

I recently took out my show bridle that I used back then, and even though it has been trunked-up for… decades maybe? It’s still as soft and pliable and nice as ever. I think the organic magic stuff in Murphy’s fed it all all those years ago.

Glad some tried my recipe - it works

I use Dr Bronners Lavender … the base is Castile soap, which we used when I was a kid… and the smell is SO nice!

I have switched from Murphys to castille soap. But I will ALWAYS love the smell of Murphys

I used Murphy’s on my leather harness–it worked very well.

24h & counting…
Seems like it has gotten a tad bit thicker, but not yet as “gelly” as I’d like.
I’ll give it another day or so & report back.

Oooh!
I like the Dr Bonner’s lavender idea too

I am one of those who hates the tacky feel, but it certainly won’t hurt the leather. I’m not sure there’s anything Murphy’s WON’T clean.

That is all everyone used at the track until we got nylon harness that we could just hose off. Spent many hours cleaning harness with Murphy’s and the added bonus was it helped keep hands from getting too dry and sore

I have one of those last remaining jars of the jelly form or Murphys, and I have left the liquid form exposed to the air. IMO, you won’t change the liquid into jelly.

Sadly, no Miracle of Transubstantiation works for Murphy’s Oil Soap. If it did, people would not be rending their garments and composing lacrimosas for the stuff.
