Cleaning bling

I found one old post, but since bling on tack has been getting more and more popular… anyone have good cleaning methods for a crystal browband? I like my tack sparkling for shows, and it’s driving me nuts.

Windex and a soft toothbrush. Works like a charm!

If you have a dental water pick, it works like a tiny pressure washer.

Baby wipes (specifically Huggies brand naturals,)–instant sparkly bling browband.

This.

I wasn’t happy with the results from windex and a toothbrush yesterday. I then tried soaking in a couple Efferdent tablets, which helped a bit. But it’s still nothing like when it was new.

What is the crystal set in? Is it nickle, silver, brass? What type of crystal? Swarovski, something else? That will impact what you use.

I’ve had good luck using metal polish for settings + swarovski crystal. I use Brasso for my POH browband that has some brass elements which are prone to that green gunk. It can be a real PITA to get that out between the settings. I will use a toothbrush to apply the Brasso.

I have a Passier Swarovski crystal browband with brass settings and also use Brasso on it. Buff with a paper towel after. Brilliant shine.

WD40 for nickle hardware, or SimiPolish (…SP?) for nickle/chrome plating.

I’d probably start with a toothbrush and some elbow grease, but I wonder if any jewelry places would clean it for you. My jeweler had this little machine that used ultrasonic waves (I think, anyway) to blast the dirt out of it and all the hard to reach places. If you got the worst of the dirt out with a toothbrush, I should think they’d be able to get the last little bits out pretty quickly to bring it back to that “brand new” gleam.

Wow, thank you Beowolf. I just gave your suggestion a try and it is Brasso for the win! (I also have Passiers with Swarovski crystals in brass.)

If you have an electric tooth brush, save your old brush heads to use when cleaning jewellery. A little bit of water and a couple passes with the brush head brings out a beautiful shine. I only use my bling for shows (store it otherwise) but I think it would work on a browband!
