Cleaning vinyl tack trunk?

67 views and no answer to my question over in Of Course, so I’ll move my Dire Query here:

Best practices and products for cleaning vinyl tack trunks? I know it can get sticky over time. I don’t want to cause that because I don’t know my chemistry (and I don’t).

And I think I have heard of folks using Pledge or similar to make it slick and dust-resistant?

How do you Fancy Barn Grooms do it?

Pledge, Windex, any regular house hold cleaner for that type of finish.

Or good old soap and water…

I have a can of pledge to clean up the vinyl in my trunk. Saw a groom down the aisle from us do it at a show and have found it very effective.

I tried every household cleaner and Goo Gone without success. Then a friend of mine used Showsheen and voila! cleaned all the gunk off of it. Who knew? Anyway, give it a try

Goo Gone has worked for me but you’d want to follow up with another cleaner like your average all purpose or Windex to get off the bit of oilyness from the Goo Gone.

I would try a silicone spray made for car dashes like Armour All. Probably clean with a bit of dish soap in water, first.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

Now that I’m reminded, I do remember using Show Sheen on trunks at horse shows.

I can’t imagine putting anything oil or oil-based on the trunk as I think it would get sticky. But I also don’t know what makes vinyl get sticky over time or not.

Sticky? Um, ick.

I wipe mine down daily with a damp cloth, and it still looks like new more than a decade on.

When needed (not often) I’ve given it a more thorough cleaning using plain old dish soap, making sure all the soap is removed with a wet cloth afterwards. I’ve never needed any sort of polish.

I know, right? X2.

But I have see the sticky. Granted, it was in the kind of barn where nothing had been cleaned off in a long time… but the specter haunts me none the less! Maybe it came from being dirty and allowed to sizzle in the sun? I don’t know… and ignorance breeds fear.
