Any tips on cleaning your air vest? The instructions say do not machine wash or submerge the mechanism in water. Mine is smelly and will likely just get worse with the hot weather. One tack shop thinks they have an easy solution to this problem: buy a second or third vest! Oh sure! Any tips would be appreciated, thank you!
Any type of antibacterial disinfectant should help kill the smell. Maybe try a disinfectant wipe on the inside first and see what works.
Maybe try a diluted solution with Odoban disinfectant on a soft microfiber cloth. Keep dipping, ringing out and wiping vest. Probably a few ounces Odoban in a 8 quart bucket of water.
You can find the gallon size Odoban at Home Depot, Lowe’s and Chewy.
I use it in my general laundry and never had an adverse event.
I have yet to clean any of vests after 20 years of eventing. I always let them air dry and air out after each use. I guess they get “washed” when I run XC in the rain or gallop through the water complexes?
my husband thought we could “save money” on dry cleaning with one of those at home steamer closets. I don’t think we are saving money but it is perfect to refresh the vest, so I’ve stopped being mad at him for that one (everything else is fair game).
Someone this week posted she dilutes and sprays Tide Antibacterial spray and Febreze fabric refresh to keep her vest smelling clean. I think I will try that too.
Try searching for sports gear cleaning services. They use ozone or sonic cleaning to disinfect and remove odours. If they can get stanky hockey gear fresh-smelling, they can surely get your vest smelling better!
Thanks everyone for the tips, my barn mates also say thank you
Here’s to a sweaty summer!
