Clear liquid dripping from gelding's penis?

After our ride today, with my gelding on cross-ties, I noticed that he had droplets of a clear liquid coming from his penis. He was partially dropped, which isn’t unusual when I’m grooming him, and the droplets were coming from the penis itself, not like it was sweat or something collecting and dripping (plus he wasn’t sweaty). I don’t think it was urine because it was clear, but I guess it could have been. It was enough to make a few wet spots on the mats. I took him to the wash rack and cleaned his sheath (which had been done about 5 weeks ago when the vet was out) and found a couple of small beans, but nothing that should have been a problem. He was really pretty clean.

I thought maybe he had to pee and was trying to hold it, but I turned him out right after and he never did pee. I didn’t exactly stick my nose up in there or catch a droplet in my hands, but I didn’t notice any kind of funky smell. The droplets were clear, not cloudy.

Could this be a symptom of a UTI? Anyone have any ideas? It didn’t even occur to me to take his temp, but it might have been artificially elevated due to coming in from work anyway. He was his bright and chipper self, didn’t seem like he was feeling bad.

It’s probably nothing. Recheck him tomorrow and see if he is still doing it. And it probably was urine dripping. It would also more likely to be a bladder stone than a UTI. Again, not concerning as a one time or even intermittent thing.

If it was clear I would check and see if its still happening tomorrow. I also think its urine. If you didn’t smell any funky smell, then I would think its not an infection. I had a stallion that dripped a few time once or twice a year, a clear liquid and I got a vet out and nothing could be found. He never had any other problem with it and never gave it a second thought.

You could give your vet a call and ask if its still concerning you.

Sorry to bump an old thread. My thoroughbred gelding just started doing this. He’s always been one to relax and drop in the cross ties, but now he’s been “dripping” a clear liquid the past few days. He’s also been dropping more frequently (he is very relaxed lately, so perhaps that’s why). He’s still peeing fine. I was going to give the vet a call Monday and see if I should be concerned… and then came across this thread in my googlings. OP, did your horse end up ok?

Funny, I had this issue with a new-to-me gelding last year. He’s a happy boy and ‘relaxes’ a lot. After a grooming session, he started in with a few droplets of clear liquid from his penis. He did this several times. He was fine otherwise, so I was mildly concerned and figured I’d bring it up to my vet next time I saw her.

Then my OTHER gelding, who is also a happy boy, started in with drippy penis while being ‘relaxed’. I freaked out and called my vet.

After an examination, my vet — who specializes in repro — informed me, with a chuckle, that both of my boys were masturbating. Totally normal behavior from happy geldings.

I called the vet after the third day of dripping, and she’s coming out Thursday. It is definitely out of the ordinary for him. She is assuming it’s urine, and said we can ultrasound the bladder and see if there is something going on internally.

On the phone she mentioned that dripping urine is a sign of EHV, and there is an outbreak in our province, albeit 3 hours away. THAT didn’t cross my mind until she mentioned it! She then went on to reassure me if he’s showing no other symptoms that it’s extremely unlikely he has it, especially considering how everything’s been shutdown for months here.

I’ll update the post after the vet comes. Would you believe that with everything on the internet, when googling my horses symptoms this post is the only thing that came up that was even close to what I was experiencing?

Hi. Did you ever get an answer from your vet? My 7yr old gelding was doing this today. I’ve never seen him do it before but he has had it out much more lately and I put it down to being relaxed and hot as the temps have been high but today there was a clear liquid and it left a few drops on my mats.
Thanks

You never did update what the problem was? If you are still around what was the issue??

Vet did an ultrasound on his bladder and all looked normal. Funny you mention the heat and him being relaxed - that’s exactly the scenario when it was happening to us. We ended up going the “continue to monitor” route and he eventually stopped and never showed any discomfort either.

It sure was odd, and I wish I had a better solution to the issue!
