Clearance for cat under gate?

I am installing a pet gate to contain puppy to the upstairs area but would like my cat to be able to fit under it for escape purposes should she need it. Should I leave clearance for her to crawl under or just let her jump over it? And if so how much clearance?
She is only 8lbs or so, but puppy is only 13lbs and I certainly don’t want him to crawl under the gate…

Regular adult kitties can jump over fine. If she’s elderly or has another reason jumping is uncomfortable, giving her space to crawl underneath would probably be good.

At eight pounds, she won’t need much. Cats are almost as “squishable” as mice:)

my outside cat weighs about 15#. His winter bed is duct taped to the hood of the heated tractor in the garage. There have been times I have missed my mark and only left the overhead door cracked 4"- 5" and he still gets out.

It sounds like a fine line for you until the pup grows a little more, as dogs are great at crawling on their bellies and getting thru seemingly impossible openings. I have watched some jaw dropping escapes under fences with some of my dogs, lollol

hopefully your puppy doesn’t have the mindset to be an escape artist – often what holds one dog behind a fence or gate won’t hold another one:).

I bought a baby gate with a “cat door” in it. My cat fits through the gate but not the dog.
