Clearance steel buildings

Has anyone bought a steel building (barn or arena) on clearance?
On the site below, there are some deals to be had. I have my dream barn and arena in mind, that I have whittled down to the bare minimums. But a clear span building that is big enough is still dauntingly expensive. I have a few plans in mind that would allow me some flexibility on building size, so when the time comes, I don’t mind a slightly different size in order to score a decent deal on a building. But I’m gunshy of scams. I have contacted steel building manufacturers in the past and ended up talking with some shady people that were all ready to get my credit card info over the phone, without ever giving me a quote.

So opinions on reputable steel building manufacturers would be welcomed too; preferably with site links, because ya know how many “Olympic Steel” companies there are?!

Thoughts?

ETA: And no, I cannot go around speaking with those who have built arenas in the past. I’m in cattle ranching central… people don’t ride in arenas where I live.

Of the steel building fabricators I am aware of rarely do they have a surplus structure if ever as their buildings are fabricated to order with the financing or payment in order prior to fab. If they do have a client back out/fail many if not all of the components can be reallocated to another project as most building are not unique.

The fab companies I am aware of will assemble the building’s components then ship the structure to the destination, anywhere in the world theses days… so maybe that surplus building is coming from China as their steel industry is in a tail spin downward.

We ordered the barn kit from a reputable manufacturer and put it up ourselves.

With those recycling companies, we didn’t trust any we talked to, so ended up getting bids from manufacturers.

Even where you are, there are firms that put commercial buildings up, that could find a manufacturer and put their buildings up for you.

There seem to be some good companies around Denver, that would not be that far for you?
There are plenty of trainers that have indoors in CO, someone is building those?

We ordered our building from Rhino Buildings in Denton, TX.

Once on the trucks, it was two flatbed trucks worth for us, the freight is not that much more to go several hundred more or less miles, distance doesn’t mean that much for the overall cost of the building.
Three of us put the building up easily, on a foundation our local engineering firm had designed and certified for that structure.

Be sure if you go with a company that puts the buildings up where they are getting the building, to insure they are not buying it from someone that is not a good fabricator.

There is a poster here from Denver that is an equestrian planner and could help you:

I think it has been part of building big equestrian convention centers all over, one in Houston, so distance should not be a problem.

You could PM her and see if she can help you directly, or who she knows that is reputable, that would fit what you want to do.

I got ripped off in one of these deals and my friend bought another and the engineering and set up that he went through cost a ton of $$$. It is better if you get a turn key price from an installer. That way, the installer takes on all the things that could go wrong (delivery, engineering, set up, missing parts, cut outs in the wrong place, parts arriving early needing storage, parts arriving late and holding up the job). They also tend to mislead you with the cost of erecting the building so that you will bite and send a deposit. My sales guy got fired for doing that and not adding in my extras. Bad memory!

My b/o looked at clearance buildings about 15 years ago and we got enough information to put her off that option. It wouldn’t have saved that much money and she wouldn’t have gotten the size and type of building she really wanted. She finally ordered a 120x200’ steel building that was installed by a local company. The mortgage is almost paid off. We have a barn that is 40x200 and the indoor arena is 80x200. The only problem was the skylights, which needed to be reinstalled and caulked a few years after construction. They have been 100% fine since then.

Thank you all for the information. I thought a few “bought but never erected” buildings weren’t too peculiar. But turns out there were hundreds of them. After looking through them, I can’t imagine THAT many people bought the damn things and never put them up. I can’t hardly stomach the price of a new building and don’t want to squash my dreams… again. Perhaps I’ll go back to looking at pole barns, but I’m having trouble finding a company that will do any wider than 40 feet clear span

Check CL’s I bought a 38x40 steel building, never erected for 7k

You should be able to find clear span buildings up to about 150 feet… widen your search to Denver I worked on the new airport back in the early 90s, they had companies then

That post #10 by a new poster looks like possibly spam!

Be careful clicking on such strange links, may contain malware!

Wood pole barns up to 150 feet? I had thought they could go up to 100 these days, but oddly cannot find one that states they can go that wide (on the websites I’ve looked at). I’ll expand the search towards Denver as well.

Clear span steel on the 150ft and greater (the OP was steel buildings)… if wood using custom glulam beams can span more than 100 feet.

The 40ft limitation you are getting on clear span wooden trusses is most likely due to limitations in shipping as clear span wooden truss can be into the 80 ft range

Oops sorry for the confusion. I thought your post was in response to my “Perhaps I’ll go back to looking at pole barns” post. I should have referenced wood in that post. My apologies. Thank you for the link.

Doing some searching last night, I did find a wood pole barn company that is local to me (since y’all talked me out of the clearance building, and a new steel building is out of my ballpark). They have some fairly nice looking barns an arenas. Not sure of the clear span size yet (need to contact them) but I’m confident they can do wide enough since they have done arenas in the past.

The site you posted looked legit, it’s a craigslist for buildings so you’d have to screen each individual seller. You’d have to contact some contractors and see how much it would cost to put the building up, and how you could ensure that all the parts were included.
