Clenbuterol: is this okay to use and ride in AERC?

My mare suffers from seasonal allergies and we have managed them very well, most of the time with herbals (APF and Cough Free). This year it’s really bad and today wasn’t a good day for either one of us since I have allergies as well. The vet suggested we try the bronchial dilator if she doesn’t get any relief. Is this something that I can use doing aerc rides? Does anyone have any experience with this drug?

Usually once the trees are in full leaf, our allergies subside, but I feel like we will lose valuable time waiting it out. And then her allergies flare up again in the fall, and I want to do a ride in October or November.

I don’t think it’s legal. If you use the drug between rides, be sure you allow enough time for it to get out of her system. For many drugs that is 5-7 days.

If you read the appendix you can see there is a threshold value to stay below. Also read about half-lives

No, not legal, no medications are legal. I too have a horse that has developed allergy problems. Watch the supplements. Many of them have MSM in them which also isn’t allowed in therapeutic doses. Good thing they don’t test people.

Wow, I didn’t know about the MSM. I don’t currently use it but considered trying it…chicamuxen1, what do you use for your horse?

I just entered for the Foxcatcher 25 next weekend, first ride for my new horse.
Fair Hill should offer great trails and Im riding with Linsey Cooke – looking forward to it. Maybe we’ll meet at a ride this year

In a word…NO. AERC is a “No Drug” organization. Water, salt, electrolytes, hay, commercial feed (that doesn’t contain anything on the forbidden list, like yucca or MSM), beet pulp, apples and carrots - those are your base items allowed.

If your mare has seasonal allergies - headshaking, specifically - I would suggest you start using free standing Lysine on a daily basis. 2 ozs/day through pollen season (spring and fall). It has several studies to back up it’s highly effective ability to help prevent headshaking from pollen allergens. Lysine is an additive in almost all commercial feeds - it is used as an immune booster. It is not on the Forbidden Drugs list, and is OK for AERC rides.

MSM is NOT allowed - it’s on the Forbidden Drugs List - even though it doesn’t test.

Riders aren’t tested. Most are competing under the theraputic benefits of Tylenol, Advil, or (my all time favorite) Aleve.

PS - Good luck to everyone going to Foxcatcher at Fair Hill!! It’s a great venue - those rolling pasturelands are breathtaking. I was at the very first Foxcatcher ride - did the 25 and remember it fondly as being terrific fun! All the following years I did the 50! Always loved it!

This year I’ll be on a 50 mile club bicycle ride with an old endurance buddy (who is also now into biking), but we’ll both be thinking of ya’ll on your horses, having a grand time.

Be really careful with the withdrawal times for clenbuterol. I’ll double check but I believe it is a lot longer than 5-7 days for that particular drug. They use it on the track as a performance enhancing substance and I think to stay on the safe side you need at least 45 days off it.

Yikes. Well that’s motivation enough to continue to look for a legal alternate. The lysine sure is cheap, so I’ll definitely try that.
