Clinicians

Karl Mikolka

Stefen Peters
Maryal Barnett
Michael Barisone

Haven’t really seen many clinics but would love to watch or ride w/ Catherine Haddad Staller, Steffen Peters, Uta Graf, or Carl Hester.

Courtney King Dye - although I get to ride with her once a twice a week:D
Juan matute - especially helpful with passage and piaffe
Roel Theunissen
Axel Steiner - he surprised me a little as I thought I’d only really get the judges perspective and got a ton more and very confidence boosting
Lilo Fore
Lendon Gray

I would love to ride with Gunter Seidel as I really get a lot out of his videos on Dressageclinic.com
Courtney is wonderful! I have ridden with her!

Francois Lemaire du Ruffieu

Christine Traurig
Conrad Schumacher
Anne Gribbons

In no particular order, and for an AA just mastering the basics, I like:

George Williams
Betsy Steiner
David Wightman
Christian Schacht

I would love to get a chance to audit a clinic with Betsy Steiner. (Unwilling to expose the overweight overaged female on the Irish horse) If you have not read her book you should take a look at it. If you have a Kindle you can download a sample from Amazon.

I can’t believe I forgot Shelly Francis! She is a very good clinician.

If I had a list a of “in my dreams”:

  1. Carl Hester
  2. Johann Hinneman
    3.Debbie McDonald
  3. Steffens Peters
  4. Gunter Seidel

Another vote for Christian Schacht

I have audited and/or ridden with some of the people on this list, along with some notables who have passed. Not mentioned, and truly talented and giving with information, is Eric Horgan. As a dressage rider, even if his forte is eventing, I was completely impressed with him, and I rode with him a number of times.

Francois Lemaire du Ruffieu
Another instructor with a solid Saumur/Cadre Noir training that concentrates on lightness, impulsion, the rider’s body mechanics, and also incorporates jumping in his clinics.
This gentleman has been around for a long time. I audited a clinic of his in the UK 2 decades ago.
He has been in the US since the 70’s and has a solid following.

2 books by him:

The Handbook of Riding Essentials
Handbook of JUMPING ESSENTIALS

I will clinic with him in the future, if logistics makes it possible.

Ditto Jeremy Steinberg

Excellent eye for detail, clearly lots of experience working with different types and breeds of horses. Gives same care and attention to lower level riders and “off breeds” as GP riders on the fanciest warmbloods.

Huge focus on correctness over flash.
This is absolutely why he is so valuable. I love the theory aspect, which is why I love riding with him.

If Alex Gerding were still giving a lot of clinics, he is similar in teaching anyone who is able to learn and improve - one of the rides he seemed to most enjoy which I saw was helping a VERY beginner rider figure out how to get her sticky lead. Alex has taught me so much about feeling my horse and using that to guide what exercises I do, rather than having some sort of preconception of what I will do on a given day. Jeremy has given me the same thing in different ways.

The number one trainer I would love to ride with is Debbie McDonald because she mastered ease with her short height - and I need help with that! I also really love that she seems to impart that upon her students.

The rest of my wish list:
De Kunffy (who was here this past weekend, but it didn’t work out for me to go)
Zettl
Bereiters from the SRS as mentioned
I’ve heard Shannon Peters is wonderful, and would love to ride with her, too.

Also

I love riding with Jeremy Steinberg, he is so good at explaining things, and breaking things down to basics.

I would love to ride with
Carl
Charlotte
and Debbie McDonald

The big question is…how much money do you want to spend/do you spend on dressage? How much do you want them to tell you how fabulous you are/your expensive horse is versus how much do you want them to teach you? The former excludes several people mentioned. Following, how much do you want to hear how crappy you, your horse, and your budget are compared to current FEI horses/owners? This also excludes several people mentioned.

Janet Foy and Hilda Gurney are very knowledgeable without breaking your bank. They’re also honest with you. DeKunffy is very good regarding explanations - he talks ALOT (good info).

There are many good BNTs mentioned, and your budget might be key to getting the most out of your BNT experience.

Excellent points, J-Lu.

I pay to be told what’s wrong, what needs to be improved, and how to do that.

Everybody likes complements – but please don’t shine me on OR ignore me completely because you don’t like the horse I rode in on.

Is he still doing clinics? I audited one of his about 10 years ago and he was just amazing.

Mette Rosencrantz has given me the biggest breakthroughs in my riding. She’s not going to sugar coat anything, she’s very clear and always fair to the horse, and for good measure she is hilarious.

Shannon Peters
Debbie McDonald
Linda Zang

All amazing. Debbie is really expensive. Shannon and Linda were comparably priced.
