Clinics and Large Horse Shows in Zone 5

Hello everyone! I’m looking for jumper clinics or places to go train with a great jumper trainer for a week or two in zone 5. COVID aside, what are some large horse shows other than GLEF and WEC? I’ve become more serious with my riding career and I would like to start showing higher levels as well as getting advice from trainers that have lots of experience training jumpers.

There really isn’t a “COVID aside” where large shows are concerned. Not yet.

Perhaps you can find a trainer in your area who will take an unknown horse and rider into their barn, or come to you.

Do you have a trainer that can help you? Anyone you find will be area specific at this point in time.

This is, unfortunately, not a good time to begin showing at higher levels.

It is a great time to work with your horse, train at home and perhaps find instruction close by.

I am not in your area, however I’m sure there is someone here that may be able to help you find a trainer close to you, if you are a bit more specific about where in Zone 5 you are.

Just the general area of the state where you live will help. There are many issues with travel, hotels etc… Each state has a different rate of infections, hospitalizations and deaths, so where you are matters at this point in time.

It’s an unfortunate time to have great horse show ambitions, but a good time for schooling and reading, and lessons if they are safe and available.

Good luck.

HITS Chicago is another circuit in Zone 5, although shorter than GLEF or WEC. HITS Chicago at Lamplight starts in June and runs for 3 weeks, plus another 3 weeks at the end of July/ beginning of August. You’re probably too late to enter the June shows but you could do the later ones.

As for jumper trainers, there’s obviously a ton in the Chicago area. I can think of several who would likely be attending all the Lamplight shows who’ve won multiple grand prixes. Mary and Lisa Goldman/Red Coat Farm, Thomas Cerra/ Blue Mountain, Steve Schaefer/ Bellis would all be good people to show with for a few weeks. Not sure if you’re looking for somone to ride with while showing but personally I wouldn’t expect to roll into a show with no trainer and expect to expand my jumper riding skills.

I think there’s also a Chris Kappler clinic coming up in Chicago? Diane Carney hosts/books a lot of clinics. Facebook is your friend here.

I currently have a wonderful trainer but she is not able to take me in the direction I wish to go. I’ll be staying with my current trainer for the next year but I’m looking ahead to create a game plan of where and who I’d like to train with.

I do not plan on showing higher this year but I’m looking at starting next year. I’m located in the lower half of MI/ very top of OH. I’m willing to travel for lessons, clinics, and shows.

Thank you for all the trainer suggestions! I’m planning on possibly showing at lamplight next summer.

Can’t say enough good things about the Chagrin H/J Classic. It’s home to america’s oldest Grand Prix and just an absolutely wonderful show to attend in one of the most beautiful parts of Ohio horse country, just east of Cleveland.

Pretty sure Chagrin is cancelled.
